Given that I couldn't find a The National thread here, I assume they aren't overly popular round these parts. Anyway, I like them and they have a new album out that is a bit of a departure from their usual stuff. After the third listen it's starting to grow on me.
I've tried but can't get into them. Don't know what is. Maybe too Brooklyn/NYC hipster for me? + they have a real unhealthy fascination with the Hateful Fred.
Lol. That's how I feel about Interpol. I'm trying and I don't hate them but they don't really move me.
I got into The National after hearing Bloodbuzz Ohio which I still love. I worked my way back from there and found lots to like. Granted, their songs do sound quite samey (but not as bad as Interpol!) I don't really hear the Grateful Dead influence though and I think that they're actually from Ohio but they do exhibit a healthy dose of hipster, I guess.
Anyway, on the new album they're experimenting with different sounds and singers. It's good that they're trying something else but I'm not really sold on it yet. Half the time it sounds like Matt and the band are on different tracks. The singing and the music don't seem to go together very well. There are some more familiar sounds on there, too though.
But I only got the album yesterday, though. So we shall see.
I like them! I hear their stuff on XMU every morning pretty much. Another group that is new and quite odd is this one. I have such wide tastes in music. Can't lock me in. Sorry.

Finally managed to see them live for the first time in Copenhagen last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surprised by how big they are here. They played a 12,000-seater arena which was close to sold out.
