Just as an add on to the above, my feeling is that there are some songs on the album that are deeply personal to various members & they probably want to make sure they do those justice.
once upon time, they released an album once a year or there by, those were the days
This is very true. I think, early on, especially signed to a major label (fiction being owned by polydor), there was contractual obligations to do that which would have been a lot of pressure I'd imagine. As they got bigger, they probably were able to get a better deal which didn't pin them down to that tight a timetable. I was thinking about the whole timeline behind this new album. After 4:13 Dream, Porl was ejected leaving them a bit stuck. Roger rejoined & a year later Reeves joined & they basically did little else but tours & festival circuits. By the time they got time to seriously write & start work on the new material in 2019, personal tragedies hit more than one of the band, putting the brakes on everything. Then, when the turmoil seemed to be passed, covid paid the world a visit. Effectively pressing the pause button on all the recording process. Not only that, it also meant they couldn't even play & their entire road crew were left with large shortfalls in their income. Hence the special crew merch they sold to try to raise funds for them. Robert then admitted he was the gating point as he hadn't recorded vocal tracks he was entirely happy with while it seemed, at least according to Roger, everything else was done. By the time the world re-opened, the public were Jonesing to go to concerts again & so, the touring started in 2022 where we started to get a taste of the new songs. Add to all this the fact that since 4:13 they haven't had a label &, let's be honest here, without a label & its production/distribution abilities, a band as big as The Cure are pretty screwed if they want to release something. Especially given all the crazies who insist on having a vinyl LP on release day. I am sincerely hoping that now there is a label lined up at least & that there'll be a pause enough now to finalise what has been recorded with no more distractions. It has been too long. But, & I am trying to be the eternal optimist I know, I think there have been some legitimate reasons, 2 years of which didn't just affect The Cure. Hang in there everyone. It'll be here when it's here
Didn´t Pearl split up with Robert´s sister what caused some strong feelings? Also Pearl and Roger do not particular like each other, so no surprise he is gone when Roger is back.

Well, let's just say his exit wasn't exactly voluntary

If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!
At this point I can feel my optimism about a new album vanishing. All I can say is that I genuinely hope the creative process and performances have been fulfilling for all involved.
The boys have been shamed in a new article from the RollingStone regarding the overdue new album. Ha, the writer thinks "They can’t mess with fans forever and never deliver."
The Cure — 16 Years Since Last Record
Last Album: Up until the late 2000s, the Cure released a new album every three or four years like clockwork. The most recent one was 2008’s 4:13 Dream. It was originally plotted as a double album, but Robert Smith chopped it down to a single. “On the verge of 50 and leading a double-guitar gnarly-glam version of the Cure,” Rolling Stone‘s David Fricke wrote in a mixed review of the album, “Smith sounds less like a lovesick prince in 4:13 Dream‘s looping-riff viscera and swallow-you-whole echo, and more like the avenging middle-aged Roger Waters on Pink Floyd’s Animals.”
What Happened? Robert Smith became ever so slightly unreliable when it came to promises of a new album. He told fans in 2014 that a follow-up was coming called 4:14 Scream. That never happened. And whenever he spoke to the press in the decade that followed, he insisted the new album was imminent, now going by the title Songs From a Lost World. “It’s so dark,” he told Rolling Stone in 2019. “It’s incredibly intense… We’ll finish it before we start in the summer, and it’ll be mixed through the summer. And then so release date, I don’t know, October? Halloween! Come on!”
Odds of a New Album: They can’t mess with fans forever and never deliver. The new album must be coming at some point, right? They tour all the time. This is a great lineup of the band — just last year they had one of the summer’s most-talked-about tours. What’s the delay? At this point, going to one of their shows is like seeing a band in 1994 that hadn’t released an album since 1978. That’s a really long time. Robert, come on. We’re all starting to lose our patience here. If Billy Joel can put out new material, you can do it too.

I wish I hadn't read that. Can't unsee it.
Because the article header references Billy Joel, at first glance as I scrolled down I thought that was him on the left and was thinking how gaunt he'd gotten...
