Looking at the beginning of the thread and realizing that the album has been recorded five (!) years ago (at least the music as robert was struggling with the lyrics/singing) is kind of unreal and it is difficult to stay positive regarding a relase of the album, but I hope for the best and that it will be released one day.
Re-reading old interviews like this one from 2019 is a bit hard as the album really must be a kind of sore point for Robert at this point (which may be the reason he stopped talking about it):
“I feel intent on it being a 2019 release and would be extremely bitter if it isn’t. At some point I will have to say ‘this is it’, otherwise we’ll just keep recording like we have done in the past. It never gets any better. We’re due one more session then we’re done.”
Anyways I wish all of you to come well into the new year and maybe we will get a new album in 2024.
Who knows? If everyone moaned about my last 2 albums, I'd be a little hesitant to release another
I don't think true artists release art based on the reception they wish they get or expect to get. I'm not saying that reception doesn't matter, but a true artist is motivated by something different / beyond that.
For example, that's why The Cure released something like "Let's Go To Bed" after having done a masterpiece like Pornography. They certainly didn't repeat a winning formula. Quite the opposite: they tried to "kill" a certain "version" of themselves to free themselves from it.
What I'm trying to say is that I don't think true artists necessarily try to please. Of course there is an element of vanity involved, but it's not the core of what motivates a true artist to create.
Just read in a Spanish newspaper that 2024 expects new music from (among many others) The Cure. I’ve just thought of everyone of this forum and laughed.
I wished for a new Cure album on my birthday and managed to blow out all the candles so now it must come true!
Unfortunately I didn't give it a timetable so...
Unrelated to your post, but I love your picture.
Me too, Dylan Moran is by far my favourite stand-up comedian and Black Books one of my favourite comedy series. Alright, how do I avoid being off topic here... let me think... talking about comedy: I've heard the release of The Cure's new album is imminent... 🙃
Didn't age well or what's your feeling about it? The word masterpiece overused maybe. That is mine I think.
Maybe it's an overused word, but I personally don't think it comes anywhere near being a masterpiece. It's good certainly, but there are better crafted albums in the back catalogue
