thats correct steve, a proper new album tour in 2004, they did something of the same in 2008 as well
They didn't though did they? They toured, played pretty rough versions of 4 or 5 songs from what was supposed to be a double album here & there (plus A Boy I Never Knew occasionally) & then went to finish the album when the tour ended. At which point UMG told them it could only be a single album which pretty much forced Robert's hand on what tracks to release as they had played a few on the previous tour. Ahead of its release day they played 1 show in Rome to promote it. Even in 2009 they hardly went overboard playing stuff from it in the three & a half shows that year. Not exactly what most consider an album promotion.

Am I the only one who's actually quite nervous about the new album(s)? The last 2 have been a bit disappointing. I want the new material to be the best they've ever released. With Pornography Robert said "I wanted to make the ultimate f**k-off record, then The Cure would stop. As weird as it may sound I want the new album to be THE ultimate, one final tour and then thank you & goodbye

I quite liked the last 2. The production was a bit ropey (especially on 4:13) but I thought they were generally alright. If they turn out something as mesmerising & tight as we have seen them perform these past few years, it is going to be special.

I share sandgrounder's assessment of the last two albums and apprehension about the new album, but I also share steve's optimism based on the live performances we've seen from this lineup over the last few years. I guess put me in the "cautiously hopeful" category.

I don't care for the last two albums at all, either. I never, ever play them and I don't miss hearing them. I gave 4:13 another try some time in the last two years after hearing it once and being really turned off by it. Giving it another chance didn't change anything for me. They are both like nails on a chalkboard to me.
It's hard to think of not seeing them again live. Time's getting on so much since the last proper tour. But I also don't care for the festival setlists, on the whole, so festival shows don't appeal to me and I wouldn't go out of my way for one. Greatest hits shows just make me sad. They don't stretch the experience at all or feel memorable. I don't want them to turn into the Rolling Stones live.
I find that I'm more and more skeptical the new album will be completed and released. If it is, I do have high hopes it will be good and different than the last two studio albums. On the other hand, if it isn't good and RS finds that he isn't happy with it, I hope it just gets canned. I couldn't stand the disappointment of another album I strongly don't care for. I'm not sure I can imagine it being the best they've ever released because they have some albums that it's hard to imagine surpassing, but we can dream, right?
All that we've heard so far about the new album is that it going to be 'dark'. To be a genuine dark Cure album, Robert needs to be in dark place when he writes the lyrics, the same applies when they initially demo the music, go into the recording studio and then do the post production.
There are no time constraints or contractual obligations to record companies for this album.
The best Cure albums are the ones which have a definite theme to them and that theme is explored fully & taken to the limit i.e Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography, Disintegration & Bloodflowers. You don't put these albums on to listen to one track, you listen to the WHOLE album! Wish is also a complete album.
Other albums are more eclectic - Three Imaginary Boys, The Top, Head on the Door, Kiss Me & Wild Mood Swings. On these you may only listen to selected tracks. (I deliberately haven't included Japanese Whispers).
4:13 Dream & The Cure album don't fit in either category. I skip through too many songs without listening to them. Some have poor endings & some are naff ('Freakshow').
The only recently played new material has been 'Into the Light' & 'It will Never be the Same'. I appreciate the sentiment behind the latter but both are weak songs.
The Cure are an incredible live band. I'm delighted they won 'Best Festival Headliner', but I don't want them to be remembered as this kind of band. Nor do I want them to remembered as an Eighties band with quirky videos. The Cure are best when they tour to THEIR audience and I want the new album to be one that THEY have recorded for ME (and for you guys)!

Of the 4 singles, I thought Freakshow was the best. When they first wheeled it out live it was shockingly bad. But as the tour rolled on they eventually settled on a great arrangement. The 2 "new songs" though are still cast-offs from that period (according to Simon) so what might emerge is something we've not heard before at all. Sure, there will be haters, but I think that knowing they are still creating new stuff is incredibly exciting. To me at least.

I'm not alone in enjoying Freakshow
You're not alone in you excitement steve, I share it

I. Have. To. Stop. It's a great song, the most recent in the long saga of Bob's psychedelic disco tunes.
I am not a fan of The Cure album. It's my least favorite. But I like 4:13. I agree though I want this new album, especially if it is indeed the last (which given everything going on is not THAT far fetched anymore) to be the most dismal thing they have ever created.
I think it's highly unlikely that we get anything similar to Pronography or Faith. If anything, something tells me that the new album will be revisting Disintegration (which is probably why Roger loves it so much). I'd rather hear them try something new but I could live with that. The last two albums really didn't do much for me although they did have their moments.
Maybe a good model for release for Robert to look at is Bob Dylan's. Bob release another new song yesterday & announced his first record of new material since "Tempest" in 2012. The song yesterday was the third released from the new album which is coming mid-June. & these aren't necessarily "singles". The first song was 17 minutes long. I know he's not everyone's cuppa tea but excitement is building. & the new stuff has been real good so far. Article on the link.

I'm pretty sure RS knows about all the different "models" for releasing material these days. I also doubt he would consider something like that. Just a hunch. He seems to have pretty definite ideas about this sort of stuff and I don't really see him considering what others are doing in that regard.
