Hello all! I need a new computer. Mine is working ok but I need something super speedy. I found an I7 16 mb RAM Refurbished at Walmart. It's a Dell. What do you all think about refurbs and any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
My purpose in particular is to use this new computer only for my music. I use a DAW and a Midi Keyboard and the delay on my old computer with how much stuff I have in it is causing an issue.
hi Pipperoo. i've used dell computers for several years. is what my employer provides. in general, they have been pretty dependable. i get by even though its not really designed for the off work stuff the current one does everything i need.

What are your thoughts on a refubished?
i'm actually thinking about going that route since most likely i'll be leaving corporate hell in the near future.
Fair point, but you know you can partition the drive & install windoze on one partition & have both a pc & a mac in one.
I can install a hard drive and additional RAM but that sounds like Calculus to me. haha
Haha. Calculus isn't so hard really. The macs use an application called bootcamp that will let you divide your hard drive in to partitions. You can then use those partitions as separate hard drives like, say, C & C2. In one you install your PC stuff & in the other your mac things. But it sounds to me like you're comfy with a PC, so I would look at Lenovo stuff & Dell for sure. Is it a desktop or laptop you're after?

Desktop. Although i love the convenience and flex of a laptop they get too hot. I leave my computer on 24/7. Yes it does go into sleep mode though after 15 minutes. My biggest dread is going to be sending all of my software to the new PC ugh I hate that. Any easy way to do that? Can't I just put the old hard drive in the new? I know the whole licensing thing is an issue.
If it's a problem you can prevent it going into Sleep Mode. You will be able to put the old Hard Drive in the new PC easily enough.
I assume by calling it Calculus you won't be building it yourself; it's usually the cheapest way to do it. But also if money isn't a problem or you don't have the time there are companies that build exactly what you ask for and send it to you.
I prefer buying tech brand new (or 'Like New') , I've bought refurbished years ago but I'm always left slightly disappointed, others might have better experiences though!

Thank you all for the advice. I agree BlueHughes I'm a little gun shy on the refurbs so for now I just bought new RAM. Mine expands to 32GB so it's at 8 right now.(two 4s) So I bought 2 - 8s for 16 GB. I don't want to go the whole 32 GB gambit. I don't want to short out the motherboard and I think 16 GBs will be sufficient. It's an I3 so it's not horribly old and works well I just need more RAM. The FL Studio music program uses 1 GB of RAM by itself when open. That is my issue. I'll see how that works for now.
