think we need a thread where people can vent about workplace atrocities, etc. i've got a perfect one to start. it shall be called sanikangate. some of you know that i work for 1 of the huge multinational corporate devils. involves aerospace, etc. located in seattle, many of you have probably flown on planes i've worked on (when they were in developmental stage). i feel like a ghost in the machine there. anyway, friday the 13th of july we got an email. the building i work in has been having remodel construction going on forever. this email announced that all access to restrooms reasonably close was going to be cut off for 7 weeks. as our benevolent employer cares about us so much, portable restrooms (sani-kans, honey buckets, etc) would be provided in the parking lot where they bake in the 90 degree (30c) heat all day. needless to say they are a geometric progression beyond disgusting.
upon receipt of the email, i fired off a response where i dropped the ADA (American Disabilies Act) bomb. pointed out that using the porta-potties would be a very bad idea for me as my immune system is "turned off". my managers intially agreed. by monday, 1 of the managers actually counted the steps to real bathroom using a shortcut he found. bad sign about which way the foul wind was blowing. the next day, the shortcut was banned. in the meantime, the complaint was going up the management chain. i was cornered by a level 2 manager about the situation. told him that every time i had to go pee, it was taking me a half hour to hike to facilities as i am slowed by recovery from spine surgery & that a lot of work time was being lost.
this week, the subject came up at an all hands meeting with the head of the whole division. riht after that, a third level manager told me that i was going to be relocated to a far nice office at least until construction is done. i'm moving today.
the whole episode has been a farce of epic proportions & a perfect pictue of life in a mega corporation circa 2018. the ADA bomb put the fear of God into them & i won. i never complained after the first email. others in my group did loudly. i will have windows now (!) & reasonable access for necessary relief. only took over 2 weeks. once the 3rd level ordered it, the move process advanced at an unheard of pace.
the bottom line is, there was absolutely no thought to the workers in the whole process & hell needed to be raised. i have mastered the art of the corporate attack email. on the surface looks entirely politically correct but if you read between the lines there was a message. power to the people!
