Not actually a fan of The Cure. My musical preferences are much lighter. But good conversations can be found anywhere and someone I met on another forum is active here so I thought I'd member up and take a look around. Nice layout.
The few posts I make will probably be in General or Off-topic areas. I like to clown around a lot so if I get out of line, you know what to do.
Hello retread. Not quite sure what to say since you’re not a fan of the band that brings us together here...but I guess you’ve got a friend with great taste? 😉 We have a pretty great community here, something I think many fandoms are quite envious of.

Yeah, it does make for an awkward moment, doesn't it? You say "I love The Cure" and all I can say is . . .
Somewhat ironic that I wasn't that much a fan of them at the time. Back then I was more into Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, and of course the MC5.
A few years later though, I started to appreciate them. Tony Peluso destroyed what should have been one of their best songs (Goodbye to Love) with a hideous guitar solo. The notes he played were fine but the fuzztone was just plain nasty. I've enjoyed guitar solos with more distortion but the pick attacks on that song were in your face. Brittle and edgy.
A little trivia for you (although if you're into the Carpenters you might already know this). We've Only Just Begun was originally a one-minute snippet of a song written by Paul William for a bank commercial. Richard saw/heard it and got in touch with Paul and asked him if there was a complete song or just what was on the commercial. There was a complete version (Paul later said, if there hadn't been he would have lied and quickly finished it.) and they made a deal.
Richard put together a great arrangement but Karen's voice was what really put it over the top.
retread I do remember that commercial. Yes indeed! I'd love to hear a new arrangement of superstar with Karen's voice but different musical arrangement. And no I don't like sonic youths version.
I agree, Steve. And I'd go as far as saying she had the most natural vocal style of all time. Robert Flack had a gorgeous bell-like quality to her voice. Mariah Carey has the range to hit those notes only dogs can hear. For vocal gymnastics, you can find hundreds of singers who can surpass Karen. But Karen's voice was just ... genuine.

That song always bugged me. I felt it was over-orchestrated. I'd kinda like to hear a stripped down version maybe with just a classical guitar as the main focus for the intro and backing her during the verses, although the orchestration there wasn't too much of an issue for me in the first place. The chorus would present the biggest challenge. It gets too lively and bouncy. The only upside there is sets up a nice contrast and an opportunity for the last line to spiral the mood back to melancholy as it moves into the next verse. But I don't know how they could tame the bouncy-ness down a bit and cover the spaces that are currently occupied with the horn fills. To me, those always stuck out like a sore thumb.
The guitar work in this is a rough idea of what paring back might do for the intro and the verses. But the chorus doesn't work at all, imho.
