Feel kind of silly starting a thread about tempo, but I couldn't really find any existing posts that mention it, and it's something I'm really noticing...
I was listening to two live versions of Piggy in the Mirror yesterday when I had an ear worm. There is quite a marked difference in the tempo live versus the album version, which is muuuuuch slooooooooower. The album almost sounds "off speed" to me now after listening to the two others. It's a very different feel.
Anyone else have certain live vs. album version observations about tempo that really change the feeling of a song for you?
They've stopped doing it of late, but on the 4Tour Primary was (or at least felt) so "ploddy". Since then they've pulled it back into shape & the energy is all there again.

I wonder if other people say to RS, "Hey, mate. That's sounding a little slow", or if it's all up to his ear? Save
They have to programme sequencers, loops and triggers for quite a bit of stuff so I guess all these tempo tweaks are decided by RS during rehearsal. Shifting the key, tuning or slowing down is some of the easiest ways to help a singer keep in shape for long tours/gigs..

Thanks, czuczu, that's helpful. I'm definitely not knowledgeable in that realm. Trust me, nobody wants to hear me sing. Save

That's about right. When you see pictures of setlists, you'll often see the BPM written alongside songs

Piggy In The Mirror is slowed down on the album. Same for Fire In Cairo and I'm Cold.

Unless the live version you're hearing predates the album release (which could conceivably happen) I would argue it's the opposite. Save
I think the original is way slower than they ever do it live. Nice thread!
Yep, seems like it stands even to date that they play it faster live. The versions I was listening to a couple of days ago were from 1984 and 1989. Thanks for posting the Bollywood Bowl, too! Save
@notkristie You know I played the notes and at the beginning of PITM it is E E D E D E B But the chords are E, C, E, C Then it goes to F A etc... The Cure never really released Sheet music from their early songs did they? I've never found any. I usually just figure the notes out myself because most of the time the sheet music isn't correct.

Barking up the wrong tree you are, Pipperoo. The music force is strong with you.

I haven't had any music theory in, oh, about 30 years. I can pick some things out now by ear if I'm holding an instrument, but other than that, it's Greek to me.
I totally used to play along with TC and Siouxsie &TB songs when I bought myself a cheap bass in college. Sheet music?! That's for musicians! Save
