The Samurais lived in the X-XIX centuries in Japan, long after SW events happened and in a galaxy far far away. So, for me, it makes no sense. It's just a writer -bad- idea.
It's not about whether GL are the only true SW movies or not. I don't praise GL no-matter-what. He had made huge mistakes in the past regarding SW.
I think SW story arch is the story of Darth Vader and Good vs Evil. And I think that story ended in episode VI. So, for me, nothing else it's needed. But, If anyone is entitled to make mistakes after that episode -or before Episode I-, should be GL, not Disney. But, IMHO, It's Lucas fault, who sold his lifework to Disney. I don't get it. He didn't need the money.
I think I'm in a position where I can be blissfully unaware of the larger SW universe. At the time of the originals, I never really bought into the comics & only "dipped my toes" in a couple of the books. Had I continued, I would probably be more up to speed with all the corners of that universe, but I think there is so much material that i's probably too late for me to really immerse myself. That's maybe why I can just take the films at face value & not worry so much about plot holes & canon. As for Lucas, I think he told the story he wanted to tell & decided it was time to hand it over to someone else & even though it is under the diznee umbrella, it is still the Lucasfilm mob that are driving it. I watched the bonus dics from episode VII & the diznee folks didn't appear to be meddling at all. I think their stance is that Lucasfilm & ILM know what they are doing. You can't argue with a multi-billion dollar franchise really

If you're gonna get into further stories (which I suggest you do cos they're really cool!) I would suggest you get into the current canon books and comics and ignore all that came before that has now been rebranded as "Legends"... Not because the Legends stuff is no good, only because there's SOOO much of it, and now it's all pretty much redundant - though Disney is taking bits and pieces here and there (for instance in Legends books, Luke and Mara Jade have a child and call him Ben - this was used for VII).
I would also get into The Clone Wars and Rebels animated shows cos they're fun and coooool too....
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!
I tried the animated stuff, but it was underwhelming to be honest. It was sort of like watching the real film on a phone screen. The sheer scale was lost & I stopped. I might peep into the books, but really wouldn't know which to start with & I'm slightly afraid it might ruin the cinematic output for me. Knowing the back stories would leave me picking holes (even more than I do already) or distracting me, but I may delve a bit.
