The one thing that has annoyed me about the new film is that the facts and story lines in the spin-off books are no longer considered facts. The whole point of the spin-off books was that each author had to have their storyline approved so that it worked with not only the film plots but also the other books by other authors. So for example, in one book, we learn how Han met Chewie. Now under Disney, that story is no longer relevent! Very frustrating for those of us that are reading all the books!
I also am annoyed but the change of all the EU to "Legends", but I get why they did it. If you take all the pre ANH stuff as canon (as was the case before Disney) that means all the post ROJ stuff is canon too (which it was) then Star Wars: Legacy happened and that conflicts with the Disney view.. I seriously think they put it all in the too-hard basket and just went with the movies and books & comics since Disney as the new starting point. I get it from an "ease of story telling" point of view.. I don't like it but I get it..
Yeah, I get it too. Who am I to tell Disney how to make a story?
It's just a bit messy. For example, I've "learnt" (through the books) that Ben is Luke's son. Disney have kept that idea, except Ben is Han's son. Messy, messy, messy.
Now this is getting cool Couple of notes/ theories: On Finn's sabre skills, it could be he also has the force, but doesn't know it fully...yet. But remember when Luke first picked up a sabre? Took him about 2 goes to be able to hit those remote thingies with a blast visor on, so it's feasible Finn could hold his own for a bit. On Rey. Luke's sabre "called out to her". Could it be that Luke's "remote piloting" the weapon from Craggy Island? Or was she able to absorb a good zapping of force when Kylo was trying to interrogate her? That the ship designs are almost identical lends itself to keeping the identity of the franchise. Let's face it, they were pretty iconic. As for the Falcon, I still think it's the coolest ship in the whole SW universe. So what if it looks like 2 dustbin lids stuck together with a satellite TV dish on top? It just wouldn't be Star Wars without it would it? The original films were meticulous about having a universe that was a bit "bashed up" & "worn". Home-made even (C3PO for example). That was such a refreshing departure from sci fi featuring gleaming vessels that looked as if they'd just rolled out of the show room & I think the X-wings carried that sort of feel in TFA. Certainly it was made for the fans. I think Abrams took on board all the criticism of the prequels & endless tinkering with the original trilogy & dropped all those notions into one of those garbage crushers from episode IV. He realised the Anakin/ Vader chapter was pretty well closed & looked to start new discussion, theorising & general debate with TFA. It seems to have worked too I think it was a bold step to dump the existing SW universe/ canon, but it paid off largely. Yes, there are plot holes, but then (as a few of us have pointed out already) there were plot holes in episode IV big enough to fly a star destroyer through. I won't be buying this on DVD though. Blu Ray, on the other hand....
Finn won't be a Force user. His parents were rebels, but not Force users (see Journey To The Force Awakens: Shattered Empire) - true this isn't a definite as he could manifest the skills but the Force user will be Rey. He was just reasonably OK at it given he was trained in hand to hand combat.
Luke's sabre, or rather Luke's father's sabre, called out to her. Luke says about the Force in his family in a scene now dropped from the movie but in the trailers "my father had it, my sister has it, now you have it" (or something like that)- the implication is that Rey is related to Luke (I think she is his daughter but we'll see). It could be that the sabre is focussing the Force into her, but I guess we'll see about that too.. Talk on the internet is that Rey was trained in the force use before she was dropped off on Jakku so her awakening isn't one into no Force use, rather it's one where she's re-introduced to it.
Remember she was able to block Kylo's mind probe and even do a bit of probing right back at him - that freaked him the fark out!
Each trilogy so far has been about a Skywalker. PT was about Anakin, OT was about Luke and I bet the ST will be about Rey Skywalker...
On a slightly different note, check out Collider Jedi Council on youtube

Disney is cherry picking for sure..

Didn't DC do the same thing with their comic books? IIRC they basically destroyed the whole DC universe so they could start over because it all got so confusing to match who had met, fought, killed, etc. who in different stories

Yes and no.
Yes they rebooted their entire line, mostly which in itself caused issues (Superman's history was changed, but Batman's mostly stayed the same BUT these two histories now conflict each other due to the Superman/Batman comic book series. It detailed the two characters' shared history but now from Superman's perspective the stories in Superman/Batman didn't happen, but if Batman's history is largely unchanged, those stories did happen....
Basically they had an event called Flashpoint where The Flash was sad that his mummy was dead so he went and tried to fix it and ended up rewriting history. Garbage....
The real problem was that the writing was stale and for the most part had been getting progressively worse and worse. So instead of GETTING REALLY GOOD WRITERS TO WRITE REALLY GOOD STORIES they tried to entice new readers in with a flashy reboot with no real substance. Initially it worked, the numbers were very good but lots of titles were cancelled after few issues, there have been lots of clashes between the talent and the editorial teams and basically it's been Shirte.
They tested the waters recently with Convergence where they brought in characters from The Multiverse to basically fight it out on an alien planet - these characters were from pre-new52, pre COIE anda ll over the place.. In the current continuity, Superman did NOT marry Lois, in fact she's outed him but in what I think is another water-testing experiment, the Superman and Lois from the pre-New52 Universe have landed in the New52 universe and are living secretly (for now) - see Superman: Lois and Clark comic...
Also they destroyed the history of arguably their most or second most favourite Robin: Tim Drake.... ugh.....
See what you've done? Riled me up...

True, but Vader cuts Luke's arm on their first encounter. And Luke has been trained by Obi Wan and Yoda. He's almost a complete Jedi. Finn should have been killed. That could have been a great and unexpected moment, terrifying for Rey and at the same time, inspiring her to fight against Kylo with even more anger and determination.
haha disney is retconning again... Here's the first lightsaber duel between Vader and Luke Disney@itagain
Finn dying would've been a shock but I don't think using anger to fuel Rey would be what the story needs. She needs to be fuelled by righteousness and light, not anger and darkness..... we all know where that leads....

My word, us nerds have been dumped on too many times eh?
I get that every X years the comic world seems to reboot and rewrite - see Crisis On Infinite Earths but after COIE there were good portrayals of characters... the New52 Superman in Action Comics is a jerk!

Hahaha yes, you're completely right. I should have said something like "as Finn dies, she fully realizes that her life is in danger so he uses her bright self-defense force with even more determination". Although it will be great to have Rey on the dark side, don't you think so? A young and pretty girl seduced by the dark side of the force. Hum, yes, I like it. There are no female characters on the dark side, as far as I can recall. I guess they are all on comics and books, but I haven't read any of them.
Anyway, the important thing of that scene is that Finn should have been killed. But that would have been so politically incorrect.

Assaj Ventress was Dooku's apprentice but was in The Clone Wars TV show only I think, and Aurra Sing was a force using bounty hunter who killed Jedi adn took their sabres as trophies. Lumiya but she's now been relegated to Legends status same with Darth Zannah.. so, in short, no not really... aside from Assaj

So, we need Rey on the dark side. Kylo is too soft for the job.

Kylo killed his dad to help his journey to the Dark Side. His uncle was faced with a similar test but chose not to go down that path to become the last (greatest?) Jedi so maybe Kylo killing Han and then having his training completed by Snoke will push home into the stratosphere of evil...
