So we went to see Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 2 last night. It was very good. I really like the little innuendos in those movies but of course we got bombed with twenty previews for an hour before the movies started. So three of the previews were Wonder Woman, The Mummy Another Star Wars movie... etc... Alien is currently out now. What are your thoughts on Movies now Vs. Past?
I will start off by saying I appreciate special effects greatly but the same movies over and over and over are getting really old and I am having a hard time finding movies where the script is well written and not solely relying on those special effects, explosions etc...
Sadly it has been like this for a very long time... Looks like like people love guns, explosions, special effects, and dumb superheroes stories (sorry, superheroes mean nothing to me) no matter what...
I like mainly old cinema. And some of the newest, as long it has a good story behind it.
I'm not sure when last I saw a REALLY good film. It might be The Pianist. Superhero movies are entertaining and we usually pick those, sci fi or horror for date night but it's been ages since I saw a REALLY well written film. I had high hopes for Bird Man but I hated it. Sorry. I know it won.
Hidden Figures was very good. I liked Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them plenty. & I thought Rogue One was top knotch. It was basically a WW2 movie in disguise though.
You are too right Pipperoo. I go to the movie theater every weekend, but I'm having a hard time remembering the last film that truly moved me. Sadly, mediocrity has been the rule not the exception for a very long time. This is really the new golden era of television where tv shows are taking more daring and interesting approaches to storytelling than Hollywood.
That said, there are a few films from the last couple years I would recommend: Diary of a Teenage Girl was a pretty decent adaptation of a great book, Whiplash was a shockingly good look at obsession, and The Handmaiden a twisted and sexy adaptation on another favorite book but moves the story from Victorian England to colonial Korea. Lastly, on my list of films to see is Moonlight which was recommended to me by anyone who has seen it. People tell me it is one of the most beautiful films they've ever seen.

What are your thoughts?
The big productions crush the films "small" budget, yet much more interesting generally. I like as you old movies but there are also small jewels in independent films. A bit crazy like Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" or François Ozon's "Frantz".
Did you know that a musical film "Lullaby" with very good French critics was released in 2013?

There are loads of great movies getting made now, far more than getting shown at the local multiplex but you do have to go looking for them. I just wish I had the time to see them all!
