I'd just lost my girl and my daughter, I was nineteen, living in Preston, England, a few of us got a camper and we drove to Berlin, driving into Berlin I put 'The Future' on the in the tape deck and someone said 'Its hardly hit Berlin music is it',she switched it and we hit Berlin to a Pixies soundtrack...I was living in that van in Kreutzberg, 1990, I'd just turned twenty...busking up money...met a guru guy 4 years older,he was my twin but my teacher and we were in his flat he's rollimg Berlin joints..three drags n pass...I'm smoking Preston style, 18 drags and roll another and Leonard Cohens singing the Stranger Song, we play guitars,,he has this song 'Steal Food' about stealing food! We're in Denmark and Fly Agarics and the train station and autumn cold and Field Commander Cohen making us laugh and I'm back in Chorley,Psilocybin and I'm in love and he's singing about the alpha the omega and the delta, so beautiful....all through until my breakdown..I had a speed problem and a hundred tabs of acid in fridge...I eat the acid to get over the habit...it's crazy and he gets back on tour..I get a couple of tickets for his Opera House gig and I'm down to my last very last tab of a hundred for the gig...my girls pissed off with me...you would be...but it was a bad phase, and we go go see Leonard at the Opera House...almost ten years later I've quit drugs and we go see him at the NEC or whatever it's called these days, we've got seats at the very back and she's pissed badly..just really annoyed, so come the break she leads us to seats that were empty closer to the stage...Its my first ever sober gig...no drugs , no boooze, and the best ever, he was wonderful. We had to split up this year. Tonight I'm playing 'Songs From The Road' and she texts me the news. Said 'I was listining to 'Bird on the Wire' in my head just before I heard about it' I miss her so much.. and Leonard...Sail on brother..sail on...
Thank you for sharing elfink. There are just some musicians that follow us through life...and mean something profound to us. Truly, Cohen's poetry makes him special. I'm personally glad that he reminds me of happy times in my life, but clearly he was there for you at many important moments of your life. Again, thanks for sharing what he meant to you.

There's a nice 4 page conversation between him & Andrew Eldritch here
Excellent Steve thanks for this...I read two pages so far, gotta take a break...it's tiny on my screen and I'm reading it with a magnifying glass - just great how those two minds are like a cubist painting together, so sharp and aligned. Brilliant!
