So, we are weeks away from another massive Cure tour... I was thinking about what the set list might look like this time around and came up with some thoughts...
IMO, these are not going to be 40+ song sets, for a few reasons. There is no way RS and crew can do that for months on end, especially with some back to back shows and travel (e.g. Austin-Houston-Dallas). The 40+ song sets typically happen on festival off dates (El Paso 2013, etc) or for other special engagements (Trilogy, Teenage Cancer Trust).
If we look back at 2008, shows were 32 - 36 songs. Can RS & crew do that again for a long tour? I don't know. Maybe. But I'm betting at least 30+.
What will they play? The press release stated unreleased, hits, favorites, and rarities... The 'unreleased' is anyone's guess, but I'm assuming new songs...if..IF...they actually stick to that, because we know RS and we know that was said 6 months ago lol...
Hits? We can expect 10 - 15 'singles' per show, which is about what they typically play. Favorites? Classify these as non-singles, but played almost every set... From the Edge of the DGS, 100 Years, etc... how many? Who knows. 5? 10 ?
So let's say the setlist has 15 hits, 7 'favorites'.. 22 songs. They played up to 6 new songs in 2008. Let's say 4 on this tour. 26 songs... which leaves the 'rarities' to ponder, possibly between 8 - 10 songs...maybe.
The question, is what does RS consider a 'rarity'? Just bsides? Something that hasn't been played in decades (Screw, One More Time, etc...) Something never played (Icing Sugar...)...
RS tends to focus on certain 'eras' during tours as well... 2000 was heavy on Pornography, Disintegration, Faith... 2008 on 17 seconds, Wish... 2013 - 2014 was very 'Top' heavy...
So taking all these into account...my thoughts on the direction of the setlist:
- I think 'Top' songs are out, they played it in full 3 nights in a row, and hammered it out for 2 years of festivals. 30 years is past, it got it's due again.
- The 'era' focus will be on Head on the Door/KMKMKM. We are right in the middle at 31 years for Head and 29 for KMKMKM... nice chance to tackle songs not played live since the respective tours and bsides from that era (Screw, 6 Different Ways, One More Time, All I Want, Icing Sugar, 1000 Hours)...
- We will see bsides from other eras not touched yet, as RS works through playing them all live. 'Maybe' some from '83 singles, but again I think we'll see some from Disintegration (Babble...) Wish (Twilight Garden, Halo, Play...) and possibly WMS (It Used to Be Me...would be epic).
- From a rare album track standpoint...again, the pickings are slim. Since 2000 the band has played the first several albums in full (3IM, 17, Faith, Pornography, Top) and then some.. (Disintegration)...and most of the others (Wish, Head...all but 2 songs)....
- I could see them dipping in the Pornography and Bloodflowers pool again, as some of those songs haven't been played in a long time. But again, I think because of RS fondness for that 30 year mark, we'll see the songs from Head and KMKMKM....
So here are my top guesstimates of the 'rare' tracks...which I consider something not played since 2003 (prior to the past 3 large tours) I'm going to skip 3IM - Faith, and Top... everything played in the past 5 years.

So, now we wait for New Orleans... I would say after the first 5 or 6 shows we should have an idea of the setlists... but, that being said, it's a looooongggg tour and who knows what will happen.
