One of my long term favourites. As a teenager and full of self doubts this song was like a breath of fresh air. It energised me, gave me the tools to fight the doubts. Almost 40 years since I heard it properly, realised it's meaning and I still love it, still refer to it occasionally when I need that boost to fight and smash at doubt.
I love Doubt and I’ll never understand why they never played it live until the Reflections Tour… when it was already too late to perform that song properly.
I think that's the beauty of the cure. Each album is different to the last but there is often a progression between each one and the next. Whether it's a single song or a general vibe. I feel 17 seconds leads into faith which leads into pornography. Doubt does seem to fit that, almost an introduction to what is coming.
Also the 3 albums were written in fairly quick succession so it's quite possible there's overlaps with writing/sounds.
Faith as I understand it is beyond reason, beyond doubt. It's the same thing with love. You can doubt if you really love someone, but love doesn't go away by doubting, and neither will faith. You have to do something against it to be free of it, but reasoning is useless. I guess all the aggressiveness in the lyrics come from that.
One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain So hit me with music, hit me with music

That's an interesting perspective and definitely a reason for it to be on the faith album. For me the faith aspect is having faith in yourself, stop doubting, fight the doubt. Like anything in art it's all subjective. We're all right for ourselves.
I remember an interview with Marc Bolan and the interviewer asking about the latest single and people's interpretations of it. The interviewer asking what the song actually meant. Bolan replied 'it's means whatever you want it to mean, if it creates a reaction for you, then it's done it's job, it's not what I say it means, it's what you feel that matters' or words to that effect.
