Review: The Cure Bestival Live 2011
by AForestFan
I was so excited to get this in the mail today, my first new purchase of The Cure since 2008's 4:13 Dream. It had somehow slipped my attention that Bestival was an official release, and that all proceeds were being donated to charity. So I bought it new!
The double-CD case is well laid out with concert photos, and the artwork being limited to typefaces. The rear cover states "All profits from the sale of this CD will go to the Isle of Wight Youth Trust"
The setlist is a great selection of tracks I like (Plainsong, A Night Like This), although End and Disintegration back-to-back sounds a bit depressing to me. The show closes with "Killing Another", so as not to offend those prone to violent offense against cartoonists and similar artists. Having Play for Today and Primary in one show is definitely a treat!
The liner sleeve is generous with band photos. Porl Thompson (now referring to himself as Pearl Thompson) is conspicuously absent, yet Roger O'Donnell is on keyboards, giving us a unique version of the four person "4Tour" from 2008, transitioning to the Reeves Gabrels lineup we know today. A lot heavier guitar responsibility for Robert, no dancing his way through vocal tracks this time around.
I include the thanks from the liner credits, as it seems appropriate if you're considering buying one of these for charity: "And last but not least Robert Smith for having the fantastic idea of releasing this recording, making it a charitable release and working so painstakingly on every aspect of this show before, during and after Bestival 2011".
Plus a cute liner note which may refer to a song with a day in the week: "Only Robinson Crusoe had everything done by Friday".
For my listening pleasure, I ripped this to WAV tracks so I could fit them all together and make myself a continuous play. These live official recordings are so rare, I like to make myself multiple variations. I hope you are induced to buy this show as I was, as we await Wish Deluxe and possibly more live releases from our mates in The Cure. Here's to the Bestival!
