Oh crumbs! The weather had been okay right up until that point, but I bought one of those plastic clear poncho things for $5 just in case. I think the killer blow was that line in Want "I want the sky to fall in" & then midway through Wrong Number it did exactly that. & what you have to realise is that Texas was in a drought & the ground was so baked, it was like concrete & couldn't absorb the water. So it wasn't muddy like you usually see in festival photos. The following day was cancelled, as the site looked something like this
You practically needed a dingy to get about. Was still a great night though
I was just looking for a Wrong Number video to make the joke (I particularly like the 1997 Shepherd's Bush version). But I was enthralled watching the rain start pouring. First Reeve Gabrels starts grinning, then the keyboardist reacts. Then Robert looks up to the heavens, and we switch to the audience who are yelling by this point, and the lights catch the downpour. Looks like most of you were prepared with umbrellas, though.
Also watch Robert cover his ear so he can ensure he stays in key, as the rain is deafening. Amazing to watch!

Ahah! The penny just dropped (think I'll put the brandy down now ) You know what? I think this is worthy of a thread in the live 2013 section
Yeah, there was a lot of rushing around & hasty throwing of tarps over the monitors & even Roger's keyboards rig so that no-one got zapped. At one point Roger couldn't even see his keyboards & had his hands under the tarp whilst playing. Hats off to them though. They didn't even miss a beat & soldiered on past the curfew
Yeah. By the time they played that no-one really cared how wet they were. The umbrellas were next to useless to be honest & even the poncho I bought was feeling wet inside. Although it was quite difficult to tell. I'd love to hear an audience capture. I am sure from the mid point of WN it would just be torrential rain hammering off brollies & raincoats etc.
Sticking with Wrong Number: If you listen to the audio only, you have no idea they are being drowned. I live in Florida, who knew Texas could rain like this???
Closing the song, I watched in amazement as Reeves was playing up and down the guitar neck like Prince in a funkadelic "Purple Rain" concert trance. What an asset to the band to have him playing lead.
Also liked seeing Robert twang out the opening chords. Great stuff in just one video!

They were (sort of) under the canopy on top of the stage, but the front of the stage did turn into a large puddle, but you're right. If anything they upped it a gear when the skies opened I was a bit worried they might take a break like they did in Conegliano back in 2002 but they just played on as if nothing mattered. I think they had something like a month's rain in one night that night.
