I had 2 friends called Robert. One was a Bob and one was a Robert. Neither was a Rob.
I have one "super-hero" - he is a Robert, never a Rob but sometimes a Bob....? But it is only by the media have I seen him referred to as Bob.
Never (as far as I know) has he called himself Bob or by fellow band members present or past - so where did this Bob/Bob Smith/Mad Bob come from?
For me, he doesn't even look remotely like a "Bob". If he fixed plumbing incidents or could turn his hand at re-wiring then I could imagine myself saying to Mrs Santiago, "we better ring Bob Smith, he'll sort it out (and he's cheap), I hope he leaves his dog in the car this time". But not to describe the man who penned a number of well known (and some not so well known) pop hits.
What do you think - Rob, Bob or Ragtail (that's Robert...)

I believe it was Siouxsie Sioux that first referred to him as Fat Bob (among a few other slightly less than complimentary things) I also think some of the other Banshees did. Quite naturally, she was a bit teed off when he decided to jump ship just 2 days before the Hyaena tour & so those remarks ended up in the public domain. As for "mad". That's probably come from the press but it has been used in bootleg titles too.

ah yes the Banshees jibe - Fat Bob... the days when his chin changed shape.
Thanks for Hot Wiring my brain cells !!
Often thought Siouxsie could start a row in an empty room, but I reckon 2 days before the tour is pretty unreasonable behaviour.
(Although didn't Zappa sack his tour band before the tour just for sport)??
