It’s very nice of you to look after the old man.
Can you tell if there’s any sort of wound or lump (abscess or the like) on his sore leg or paw? If not, it might be something like arthritis.

I’m a lifelong cat owner and what I can say is that cats are pretty tough and very resourceful in terms of finding shelter. They can slip into the smallest of spaces. Unfortunately the more you have him round and make him ultra comfortable the less its owners will see of him, so you probably want to have regular contact with them while his dalliance with you lasts.😻

starxx , you are doing wonderful, wise and good thing helping this lovely old cat. What I really can't understand is his owners. 18 years of age, old injury, winter cold outside and no interest from their part?! The cat is not a thing they own, it's a living creature with his needs. Having a pet means responsibility in the first place.

It's obvious for me that the cat shows he needs care, attention, warmth etc. as well as the fact that his owners don't provide all that. I'm deeply against letting cats out on the street, well protected garden is the only exception. The street is dangerous. And the old cat freezing out in the cold coming to other people houses to get some warmth is not normal. If he felt good in his own house, he would stay there. Or maybe he is just let out on purpose? Next thing, the old injury. Old or not, if one day the cat walks normally and the next one he doesn't, it means he needs a medical attention, maybe some meds. From what you said the cat gets from his owners nothing but indifference.

In some way he has chosen you, he feels that he can get care in your house. There is a saying that cats choose their humans. I would follow that... I know it may be hard mainly because of the owners who may claim their "rights". But an animal is not a thing. Maybe they would like to make a sort of a deal with you?


As for basic cats' needs, he just needs a litter box, good food (for cats, it would be the best if chosen after a vet consultation considering his age), warmth including a sort of a bed, a warm blanket or even a towel is enough for a start and a medical assistance / evaluation.

Well miracle's do happen, Michaels owner came to collect him. I didn't let her go without giving her an ear bashing, I may have to give her a Christmas gift now 😁

I said before I give you your cat back I would like to speak with you. I told her she needs to keep him in untill he is better and he needs a vet. I told her it was way too cold to leave your cat out for that long with an injury. She agreed with me in the end so hopefully the poor cat is looked after better now. He was happy to see her though, a happy ending please God.
