Oh no - I'm so sorry to hear this. Losing a pet is always awful but seeing your children upset and having her brother left alone must feel terrible. But you couldn't have done more for her, you got her to a vet and got treatment, that's more than a lot of people do with small animals.
I am worried about how my little one will take it when one of our pets dies, and how I will cope as I am a total wuss with that at the best of times, but I still think it's better to bring children up with pets than not - it teaches them so much about thinking of the feelings of others before themselves.
Remind me I said that though when I am going through what you are tonight - I'm dreading it - I hope you're all ok
Don't talk of worlds that never were
The end is all that's ever true
Absolutely. It's great for kids to be around animals. Even at school, they share the Guinea Pigs over the holidays. When we told my daughter last night, she ran off into her bedroom and then came back with a drawing with the words "YoYo, the most loved rabbit in the world". On the one hand very sweet and touching but on the other hand a bit cheeky as they soon got bored of cleaning and feeding them (because they live outside). But that's kids. I love Spaniels. I was scared of dogs and then we chose to get a Spaniel when I was 10, to help me get used to them. It worked and I now love most dogs but spaniels are special to me. I love the cats we have but dogs are so much better for bonding with, especially if you're an only child or introverted like I was.
Our spaniel would never sit on the floor, would always sit on someone's feet or discarded shoes or slippers. When she was still young she couldn't make it onto the sofa so used to take a running jump and headbutt people's legs, or climb halfway up the stairs - look through the bannister and get scared. Daft dog!! Did eat half my dinner every day when my Mum decided me not eating meat was just a "phase".
Fortunately, my first cat didn't die until I was in my twenties, that was difficult enough, I suppose it's different for each child and how it's explained to them how they respond. I've never had dogs so I don't about bonding with them, but I have had cats since I was 6 and have bonded, to greater or lesser degree, with all of them. Funnily enough, like your spaniels Paul, we got Symon to get me over my fear of cats. The other thing about cats is that you can tell them all your secrets as they never blab.
BTW - amazing how long these non-meat eating 'phases' last - mines been over 30 yrs
It's heartbreaking when a pet dies. I hate it. I have had 5 dogs and two bunnies die in my lifetime. None of them were easy. Even when my fishies die it upsets me.

Do you cook for your pets?
I do!! My birdies get birdie bread and beans with veggies and my doggie gets beef and rice!! She loves chicken the best though.
............... have you ever considered your cooking is linked to the Pet Cemetery (English spelling!) in your back garden?
Considering every one of my dogs lived well past their expected age, No!
