I would just ... clean the VHS tapes, connect the video player to a DVD Recorder and record the VHS directly to DVD. Then use the PC and DVD to, possibly, enhance colour/contrast and remix the audio to 5.1 channels.
Actually, could use a blu ray recorder to ensure no quality is lost, DVD should suffice though.
