Had a conversation with my son this morning while putting sunscreen on him before school. I wondered out loud if we'd all be tan after we have a week at the beach this summer. He responded, "What's tan?"

Here is my take on goth, I like the dark look but sometimes I feel too many people go with traditional goth looks instead of pushing the boundaries a bit. First DONT BUY YOUR CLOTHES AT HOT TOPIC!!!
Class it up a bit I have long black coats that I bought off the rack at DKNY and they look goth as F@&$. Don’t fall into traditional patterns with make up black eye liner and black lipstick are cliche, do your make up so it looks like you’ve been dead for three days.
Final point especially for men stop worrying about gender specific clothing your goth who gives a f$&@ if your clothes were designed for a women. If it looks good on you let your freak flag fly.
..... and don’t be self conscious wear your clothes with confidence and style. There will always be “why?” People the trick is to find the “why not?” People

As someone who has worn an ornamental bird and a feather duster on her head and an egg beater with a baby inside as a necklace at various points, as well as having had parents cross the street with their kids so they wouldn't have to walk near me, I can definitely say I'm all for being yourself.
I don't care about "goth vs. not goth enough", the bottom line is to just be yourself. If you are true to yourself, all the rest will fall into place (or, maybe not). AFAIK, there is no "who is more goth" contest in this life, and nobody sh!ts bats, as badly as they may wish to say they did.
If you like it, represent, represent... Just be yourself. Save

I agree with everything you wrote except the Shirtting bats part, because if you eat bats well you know the rest. I prefer the dead androgynous alien look. I think people are more turned off by the word “goth” then the look itself goth is such an old term maybe if it was called the Evil Unicorn look it would get more traction. Joking of coarse I meant the Dead Evil Unicorn look.
The Cure only mentioned 9 times, so deffo not goth then
I still think it would've been awesome if Robert had walked on stage with short gray hair, no make up in cargo shorts & a tshirt. Heads would've literally exploded!
I find it all fascinating as when I was a teenager I identified with goth as a way to be different in a sea of sameness. I realise now though that I was interested in people, writers, musicians and artists with a depth of character, rather than shallow consumerism I saw around me. In hanging out with goths I met intelligent and interesting people, so if the term is about that, I think it fits. If it's about an aesthetic, I am not too bothered about that at all. What I don't like is style over substance.

Took my niece, who is visiting from the midwestern U.S., and son to the Met today and we stumbled upon a special exhibit called Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Full of lots of great gothy garb. Some of the pieces were really beautiful, although I wasn't digging the piped-in music. As my niece said of it, "I feel like I'm walking in my wedding, but they are also going to stab me." That about sums it up.
It was displayed in the medieval art galleries, which was the perfect backdrop. Here are a few pictures. If you have a free afternoon and are in the area you may want to check it out!

& yes, our (totally not goth) boys do get a fair few mentions
This is an excellent explanation of Goth. I've always said I was goth before there was goth. I was drawing pictures of dark things from 8 years old. Went to see the exorcist at age 8. Loved it and never had one nightmare. But I still listen to non goth music at times. I think it's just who we are. Very cool.
