i just replaced my old PC, where i still kept XP and all the softwares i used through the years when i was a downloader and a trader, to a new desktop using winows7 pro. on the old one i used FlacFronted to convert all the data discs and having it i never had the necessity to use a converter on the laptop can someone suggest me a good one?
i used it back in the years, but i don't remember why i switched to flac fronted i'll give it a try....if someone else wants give another suggestion is well accepted
Thank you for this! I can only play these formats, not FLAC unfortunately. This is the 7th show from the tour I've been able to get, so I'm not totally bereft. I'm of the opinion that there is no such thing as too many tapes of shows from this tour. Look forward to more.
Me neither! My Videolan (VLC) player plays FLAC, but I usually end up downloading the FLAC frontend, which converts the FLACs to WAVE format. From there, I used my registered Switch software to convert to MP3 in various ways. To really cram MP3s into reduced format for my Iphone or Ipad, I use switch to make a really small MP3. Having WAV files let's me make full Audio CDs of the shows.
In this day and age, not having FLAC is no excuse. It's free so download it!

Thanks. The issue is my computer doesn't belong to me. It's a company computer with some pretty heavy duty security on it. I work for 1 of the great corporate satans. I don't have admin privileges, so I can't install operating systems. Believe me, I've tried. I'm trying to work around. It's a pretty good computer for the most part & the FLAC thing isn't a big enough deal for me to go drop $1200 on the computer I'd want to buy. Other priorities at the present. Supposedly I'm getting some sort of software upgrade this week & I'm hoping a new media player with FLAC capabilities. Fingers crossed.

You should really just use Foobar to take the FLAC over to MP3, without the need to go WAV then MP3. Also, you can make CDs with the FLAC files if you have the right codecs (for programs like ImgBurn and NERO). You don't need to put them back to WAV to do all of this.
Well I have a paid version of Switch that I use for MP3 conversions, as I make MP3s for different needs. I have high resolution MP3s for my car CD player, and on my Ipad/Iphone I make VBR MP3s to fit onto the small devices. Finally I need to "go WAV" because I make regular audio CDs for a cheap audio CD player for work locations where I sit at a desk. And WAVE is the starting point for all the formats I really use.
FLAC is just something weird for audiophiles that has no real use in my equipment. My VLC player on my laptop can play FLAC, but for all intents and purposes it does not exist in the United States. Heck, I still haven't been able to find a FLAC-capable digital recorder sold here, I got my Tascam online and it's for the EU market.

Certainly if you paid for it, by all means use it :-) I'm just trying to tell you what I know so you don't have to do so many extra steps.
FYI, I don't think FLAC is "weird." FLAC can be problematic in the sense that as you mentioned the equipment to do playback on is rather limited. I did have a handheld mp3/FLAC player (which I have since lost). There are home devices that play FLAC, but you will have to look for those models if you ever conclude that FLAC is your future.
I am not aware of any recorder out there currently that does direct FLAC recording.
For me personally, I enjoy not burning any CDs anymore for myself and now I keep a hard drive archive of FLAC material.
I personally like Foobar for playback of FLAC and converting them to mp3/wav/etc. Now if you were to take a FLAC that is anything above 16 bit / 44.1 khz back to CD quality, I recommend using r8brain.
dBpoweramp does everything, rips, burns, converts ...... even produces 640 Mbps MP3, but, surely everything now plays FLAC, WAV or ALAC?? My Android will play anything, add a player like USB Audio Player Pro or Onkyo Music Player for £2 and you can play DSD files also.
JRiver Media Center is also very good, rips SACD's to DSD or any format you want. Rips blu rays, CD's, DVD's - also burns. Well worth a look, and you get a month's trial.
