Just wondering, is there such as thing as good (enough) free software for making music?
By making music I mean recording something like a lead guitar and then layering a drum track over it. i.e. I have a guitar I can play (and presumably record) but I don't have a drum kit so that would be done through software.
How do people do stuff like the CCC tributes albums?
I'm not interested in doing anthing "serious". Just want to learn something new and experiment, hence free software.
I was looking at an online music production course last week and they used 'Audacity' it's freeware I think.
I second this. Pretty sure it's freeware. I've used it for layering sound files so it should be fine for what you're after. It has a lot of editing features too.
I've actually had Audacity installed for years as I use it to burn my vinyl to mp3s. I think it's more geared around music file editing rather than being able to "play" instruments?
I think the de facto standard for music creation is Apple GarageBand.
I've installed something called DarkWave Studio which certainly allows creation of drum tracks but I haven't looked further than that...

I thought you meant you were going to record yourself playing guitar and then layering over someone (or yourself) playing drums. Now I get what you mean, I have no idea for that.

sort of. I don't have a drum kit so it would mean programming the drum part. And I guess you can do the same with bass.
