After reading 'Cured' and finding out that Robert loved Literature, it got me thinking about what were/are his favourite books and authors? (I've also been reading 'Madame Bovary' and the priest is called 'the cure' so I wondered if Robert had read this at some point π. I know Lol wrote that Robert had read a book in French so maybe it was that one?) Does anyone have any ideas, interviews or comments which Robert has made or hinted at over the years that might give us some clues? I'd love to read some of his favourite books. To start things off, I know he wrote Charlotte Sometimes based on a children's book and that he liked Gormenghast π

I'm pretty sure Lol is referring to Robert reading LβΓtranger by Albert Camus. I distinctly remembering hearing Killing an Arab when I was in high school and being like, hey-I bet this song is referring to The Stranger! I went through a Camus stage in my teens and he seems to call out to all the misfits

Never heard of Camus. Something new to look for - ππ
Robert has my admiration. I have tried more than once to wade through Gormenghast without making much headway through it π΄
I have a great thesis on it by fuchsiagroan. Gives some good insight & interpretation & it's only 153 pages.
Thank you. I've just completed a Literature degree so not sure if I'm emotionally ready to read any more critical material ππ sounds interesting though. Perhaps I can stomach just one more...
Just remembered that he's said How Beautiful You Are and A Letter to Elise were both inspired by French writers. I think Baudelaire was one them. On Wikipedia it says Kafka's Letters to Felice was the inspiration for Elise, but I seem to remember an interview I read where he named someone French. But who knows? Ha.
Just looking for L'etranger in English. Would it be called The Outsider in English? (Sorry, I have a small grasp of French but not enough to read a novel).

It's The Stranger
Yeah, can't find it on kindle as that, though π€ It doesn't come up at all under that name. There is one called The Outsider which has the same main characters name in the blurb. Is it set in Algiers?
