I think the album's savagely underrated. It has so much of the "old" The Cure in it if you listen to the arrangements. There is some real darkness & discomfort in a lot of the songs & to see it get a live outing would be a treat for sure.
The cover's still bl00dy dreadful though.
i always find in THE PROMISE a lot of the 83-84 THE CURE... the bass riffs are very of this kind... lisent to it a nd after that listen the Disc 2 of the top remaster...
That cover "art" (ahem... *cough*....) is...ahem...slightly questionable... And I know what you mean, joey. I never really feel like "I really HAVE TO listen to WMS/The Cure/4:13 nightmare" right now! I only ever fell that I just HAVE TO listen to any album from TIB to Wish, sometimes to Bloodflowers. But I literally have to remind myself that albums like WMS, The Cure and Nightmare exist. The Cure I still consider the best (most bearable) of those 3.

Oh, the eponymous one! I do like the enclosed documentary. As for the album I wish it wasn't released. Maybe they get it re-produced someday in the future. I'm still impressed by the live-take-idea though.
I think you're being very polite, Melly80, by calling the cover 'slightly questionable'... gawd knows what was happening there when that idea was dreamt up.
Anyway, I have liked the album from the first listen, it's only IDKWGO that spoils it for me. For some reason it sounds better on my Blackberry than stereo - work that one out!?! I agree that sometimes you have to listen to the albums/songs to get them, so to any doubters I would say give it another try. Having said that, as the band have more musical faces than a dodecahedron, it would be surprising if everyone liked/disliked all the same stuff. Personally, I have coincided defeat over WMS and that, whilst I like the tracks on Wish, I cannot listen to the album in its entirety without wanting to go to the EOTDGS!!! Whereas, I could have Faith, Pornog and KMKMKM played pretty much on loop.
I'm surprised though that they don't do 'Labyrinth' and 'Anniversary' live as they seem to be really powerful live.
Would like to hear the mysterious 'Song 5' that never made it on the album... did it ever sneak out anywhere?
The album's really packed with nostalgia really. Anniversary has very subtle touches of Pronography era The Cure with an underlying Faith era drum line TG&B has guitar riffs that would almost be directly improvised from Pictures of You or Lovesong Promise has the same psychedelic wah wah guitar feel as you can find on The Kiss
It's not always immediately obvious, but there are real echoes of the past all through the album.
Exactly, already in 2004 it reminded me so hard especially on Faith era.
I am always inclined to claim that 4:13 is bolder album, although perhaps not better. Some things from 2008 are unbearable, but they, at least, finally tried something new. For Bloodflowers was already nostalgic so much, I wanted to encounter some fresh approach. Therefore I felt so let down with The Cure in 2004.
