Troxy may sound like it takes the name of a gangster’s mum but, in reality, it is an olde English word meaning “organ sanctuary”.
According to the bloke down the pub, it was designed by George Coles who also starred in classic British comedy drama Minder, & was constructed to protect the Wurlitzer organ found to be nesting at the site in Stepney from relentless enemy bombardment during WWII.
As a side gig though, & to raise funds for care of the Wurlitzer, it drew punters from all over the city who could experience the cinematic delights of block buster movies such as King Kong & Madame Web.
Soon, big stars of stage & screen frequented the venue all eager to have a ride on the revolving stage to see who could hold their Pimm’s the longest without falling over. Gracie Fields currently holds the record at 13 minutes & 17 seconds. This was over eight decades before Metallica stole the stage idea for their WorldWired tour. So Troxy was a true pioneer in entertainment technology.
Due to the success of Troxy, reportedly as a result of their superior popcorn, sister Cinema, The Trocadero, faced closure. The “Troc” as it was often called, housed a bigger Wurlitzer & this was brought in to Troxy as part of the endangered organ breeding program. Sadly the original organ passed away during a very stressful & ill conceived performance of Ministry’s Jesus Built My Hot Rod leaving the larger organ all alone to stalk the halls of the famous East End building.
On a lighter note, attending today’s very special Show Of A Lost World will be catsncheese , fiveswinglive , wilgy , snoopy , fantomas , shane , Lemon Lies , charlottemargita , kirstie , carlfandango , Danielle , sat , maccatori , andy , & nick110581 who will of course have popped into Beale's Eels for a slap up meal of pie & mash with a couple of pints of London Pride to take the taste away.
