The final stop of The Cure’s LatAm tour takes them 3,700 km (~3.6million Aria M650 Pro II’s) north by plane to Bogotá, Colombia.
So, what has the city got on offer? Rich musical culture, museums, colonial architecture, blah blah.
However, a couple of features do stand out. One of which is the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.
In the late 1940’s churches became inundated with witches. It got so bad that regular members of the congregation couldn’t find parking spots due to the sheer number of brooms & various covens holding raucous tailgate parties.
After watching Willow in Buffy The Vampire Slayer & John Constantine in Legends of Tomorrow, the church builders reached the conclusion the witches couldn’t cross lines of salt. So the decision was taken in 1950 to build a witch-proof cathedral. Underground. In a salt mine. This proved a great success compared to previous attempts to encircle regular churches with salt which frequently blew away in the wind. The addition of mood lighting soon transformed the cathedral into the most beautiful, witch-free, underground cathedral in a salt mine in the world. Again a huge thanks to Bloke Down The Pub for his insight.
With witches pretty much driven out of the city, street art to rival even the famous Bristolian wall-botherer, Banksy, began to flourish. Free from the threat of being turned into a newt, local “artists” began to develop their talents on someone else’s property to create a plethora of murals which can be seen on the city-run graffiti tour which provides insights into the inspiration behind masterworks such as Dr Butt and the timeless 8 ball which is unique as it’s the wrong colour.
After the tour & ahead of tonight’s final show, fiveswinglive & I guess a fair few others will be hungry for a hearty bowl of Ajiaco with a few bottles of Mister Tea (not to be confused with the guy who guards all of Colombia’s gold).
Oooh. We’ve not had a mustard & ketchup flag for a while have we?
