We’re back in the Big Peach for night 2.
By the late 1880’s, with nothing to drink, Atlantalopes were starting to get thirsty. The heat & humidity was taking its toll on the population making them bad tempered & unable to get a good night’s sleep without a cool, sugar laden beverage to quench their thirst. Until one sweltering day in May 1886 when John Stith Pemberton changed the world forever.
His business, which was basically driving a massive red truck around the country at xmas, was struggling so he needed to expand his customer base.
Tinkering in his basement with the chemistry set his mum had bought for his birthday, he invented the formula for a fluid that would clean copper perfectly & render toilets back to their original brilliant white. However, upon turning his back for just a moment, his son, Charles, was so thirsty that he drunk it before John could stop him.
He prepared another batch while waiting for an ambulance but decided to taste it himself. He was astounded & immediately set about puling an all nighter, filling red cans with with his new creation to distribute to the parched Atlantalopes.
Very soon it was being added to Bacardi, whisky & even vodka. Or just served “on the rocks”.
Pemberton named his elixir after his big red truck & within weeks everybody on the planet had the name Coca-Cola on their lips & millions flocked to see the truck & even pay for the Matchbox version. Not only was a city saved, but Pemberton’s business went from strength to strength.
Disaster wasn't to fully averted though. While Coke had captured everyone’s imagination & boosted the dentistry profession’s profits, officials failed to notice the imminent food shortage looming. Luckily Herman Lay had his eye on the ball. Lay had a rather unique skill. He was able to slice potatoes really thin. This made them go further &, moreover, quicker to cook.
He immediately set about frying as many of his wafer thin spud slices as possible & named them potato chips. Although they were clearly slices & crispy. So I think we can all agree “crisps” would have been the more apt name for them. Chips are those things that you have with fish or drowned in curry sauce. Regardless of the nomenclature, famine was averted as Atlantalopes everywhere set about munching the delicious fried snacks whenever they felt a bit peckish.
Speaking of being peckish, fans in town today are no longer limited to salt & vinegar or cheese & onion crisps so they’ll be no doubt availing themselves of chicken & dumplings with a few Penguin Pale Ales ahead of another fantastic show later.
