Our lyrical legend & his brilliant band head 215 miles east (or 1.3million average bottlenose dolphins) to New York City.
The most populous city in the USA pulled off a bit of a miracle. York, as it used to be called, had so many people using it all the time that it simply got worn out & had to be replaced. Pavements (known as sidewalks) were paper-thin, the metro lines were more like bell wire than steel rails, the skyscrapers were starting to droop & the place really needed a lick of paint. Hog Island was unfortunately so worn out it disappeared & couldn’t be replaced.
So Old Yorkers (as it’s now known) banded together to completely overhaul the city, pouring concrete, forging steel beams & donating extension rods for paint rollers so that even the tallest buildings didn’t miss out on a fresh coat. After two gruelling weeks the place was ready & to announce themselves to the world, the mayor & his mates, having seen the wonders it did for Phoenix, commissioned British rockers The Cult to compose an anthem to the renamed “New” York City which Ian Astbury claimed actually scanned better than “The Newly Refurbished New” York City.
Everything was new. The taxis were no longer black & white but instead a vibrant, friendly #F7B731 colour. Like on wasps.
Residents could ask for a tree to be planted outside their house for free, as they’d all pitched in with the refurb & the remodelling of Central Station, which was in a shocking state, was equisite prompting one visitor to declare it “grand”. Hence its modern day name.
Wandering into town today to experience that new city smell will be @notkristie , nobos , weedyburton79 , sang , olivier & finalsound who will first make sure they get themselves some pastrami on rye with a couple of cool cream beers to wash it down before heading off to have what we hope is a brilliant evening.
I’m not sure, but I think this might be the first time on the tour we’ve had orange.
