Welcome to California’s Beach City.
San Diego was originally named San Miguel until the Filipino brewery giant heard about it one day on their annual team building retreat in Southern California.
Immediately the CEO cancelled the morning’s skateboarding session with local legend Tony Hawke to get his lawyers to draft a cease & desist order to the city’s authorities.
After receiving the order, Sebastián Vizcaíno was charged with finding a new name. Now there is some confusion here as, at the time Vizcaíno was having a picnic on the beach. Frustrated at the amount of sand getting into his fresh waffle products, his words were somewhat misconstrued & so San Diego was born.
San Diego is where most of the avocados live &, in a bid to promote them during the great fruit & veg wars of 1978, a smear campaign was launched to steer people away from the local tomato industry and make the humble avocado the fruit of choice, ideal for spreading on toast, mushing to make guacamole or to create California rolls.
That smear came in the form of the box office smash hit horror, Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes.
To make it even more convincing, the movie was entirely shot in San Diego where Mason Dixon & his team and every screwball in San Diego County eventually lure the mutant fruit into the stadium & neutralise them with one of the Soundgarden drummer’s finest performances.
With the double threat of man-eating tomatoes & having to listen to Puberty Love again, the townsfolk quickly shied away from the shiny red orbs in favour of the altogether less threatening waxy pear-shaped treats that kept themselves to themselves up in their trees.
Although today, tomato crops are monitored closely for any untoward & aggressive behaviour & are largely deemed safe.
Undeterred by that stark warning, The Cure are dropping by just walking distance from fiveswinglive ’s house where he & Mrs fiveswinglive are preparing a light meal of California Burritos while stocking the refrigerator with a few dozen bottles of Buenaveza before heading out to what we hope to be a magnificent show.
And it’s always quite pleasing to have a flag that isn’t red, white & blue.
