“I’ll remember it. And Dublin in a rainstorm” sang shaven-headed popstress, part time vicar & pope ripper-upper, Sinéad O'Connor, reminiscing about just how changeable the weather is in the Irish capital. The very next line conjuring up the polar opposite of a rainstorm with long grass in the summer before offering an apology to her muse for getting handsy and then descending into a fierce declaration about fighting dragons which the Welsh were sending over to terrorise the East coast of her homeland. Finishing with a rant at her ex, the song itself had very little to do with Dublin beyond the first couple of lines but it’s a top tune & the city is very proud of its inclusion & the fame that followed.
It’s perhaps most famous though for its bay prawns which were known to be trapped by mesolithic sea food merchants over 6000 years and shipped to fishing grounds in Norway & Portugal in secret as the settlement wanted to keep a low profile in fear of further attacks from Welsh dragon raiding parties searching out the pink crustaceans which had become a firm favourite in the restaurants at the time.
In a bid to keep this closely guarded secret, after pretending to catch them locally, Norway agreed to re-name them Norway Lobsters & the Portuguese applied the name langoustine. To further anonymise them they were often sold on as scampi which were popularly used to flavour crisps that were primarily sold in pubs to people too drunk to care what they tasted like & to this day still nobody knows they really come from Dublin Bay….except you….now.
As the dragon raids became less frequent, the city became a breeding ground for famous people. Davos Seaworth, who formed a coalition with Jon Snow & Dani Targaryen who had their own dragons, remains a prominent figure &, in more recent times, space engineer, Miles O’Brien has become a beacon for academic achievements in the city after being given a professorship at Starfleet Academy after the Dominion war.
Music also became ingrained in Dublin with, not only the aforementioned Sinéad O'Connor choosing to be born there, but some fella named after a brand of dog food. But it’s musical heritage wouldn’t have the gravitas it has today without the might of The Nolan Sisters who, rather cleverly came from not only Dublin, but also Blackpool. Which is what Dublin actually means in English.
Getting in their own mood for dancing, romancing & giving it all tonight will be maccatori , starxx , altendalton , shane & thebighand . That is once they’ve finished feasting on coddle (it is Thursday after all) & guzzled some of the black stuff. Hope you all have a brilliant time.
The flag provides a refreshing change to the constant red & white we’ve seen so far. That’s nearly teal!
