Today we visit the cultural capital of Switzerland, Basel.
Straddling the Rhine, Basel shares a border with both Germany & France. As a result, it can be a tad confusing talking to anyone. What to use? German? French, English (for some reason)? Never fear. The Baslers came up with a solution for this head scratcher.
Nobody seemed terribly comfortable squishing a small fish into their ear & google translate was seen as too unwieldy what with all that typing & showing people your phone for them to read & probably still not understand.
The solution was to take a German dialect hardly anyone understands & mix it with another one hardly anyone understands & hey presto! Baseldytsch. A language pretty much nobody can understand anywhere except in Basel. Take that google translate!
The “accidental” discovery of LSD & Albert Hofmann’s cycle ride home after getting totally baked one night sparked widespread euphoria in Basel where, for three straight days each year, they embark on freaking the f**k out of each other during the Dame Fasnacht (Baseldytsch for scare the cr@p out of everyone while playing trumpets festival).
Hundreds of residents, all tripping balls, having spent 362 days of the year planning, begin the nightmare inducing event in total darkness wearing lamps on their heads & donning various masks & costumes commonly of the Waggis which is a distant & far more formidable relative of Scotland’s Haggis which is now in the brink of extinction due to modern hunting practises.
Even the children take part in an attempt to scare grandma to death so they don’t have to visit at weekends anymore.
The Fasnacht holds the record for the most amount of confetti thrown into the streets. Curiously in Basel you cannot buy multicoloured confetti. This was a decision taken by the manufacturers to prevent people re-selling used confetti. Throwing mixed confetti is seen as very bad form, since one would have picked it up from the street, which is obviously an unhygienic practice. So don’t be a peasant okay?
In addition to hallucinogen inspired debauchery & wanton littering, Basel is crazy about not only art, but preventing the export of hazardous waste. To that end it combined the two, having somewhat shot itself in the foot, by displaying their junk thinly veiled as “art” in the Tinguely indoor scrap yard where visitors can learn how to turn that old set of hub caps & disused cowbells into a true masterpiece that will snag any cardigan when walking by.
Arriving today will be Millhaus , snoopy , olivier , laperouse & Lemon Lies and let’s wish them a splendid show with no sign of the dreaded waggis or, indeed, high grade acid. Much rösti will likely be consumed & Uelis imbibed before the show no doubt.
As for the flag colours, black doesn’t look too good on the forum so I might have to put my thinking cap on for this one
