Late one night, sat with a newspaper on his head, watching the 25th anniversary edition of Richard O'Brien’s cult musical while munching on a mustard slathered processed sausage in a bun , the stars all of a sudden aligned for City No.#5’s (as it was called then) mayor.
The heady combination of the mustard, the onions, the sausage, & Tim Curry in lingerie & heels was too powerful to resist. & in any case, Hamburg did it didn’t they? & so Frankfurt was conceived.
The voting process to ratify it exposed a deeply divided population with 48% of the electorate choosing Hot Dog which was controversially endorsed by Prefab Sprout in their 1988 smash The King Of Rock & Roll & often claimed as foreign interference. This is a claim that has since been disproven as the Jumping Frog campaign didn’t receive a single vote.
With the name fully set in stone, the tourist industry wasted no time in mass producing souvenirs for visitors & locals alike to take home a small piece of history that they could later eat all wrapped in puff pastry. The townsfolk of Hamburg, who were already aggrieved at losing their landmark cities-named-after-fast foods case, retaliated almost immediately with mini versions of their city’s inspiration. But, due to various legal complications, they had to settle for the name Sliders & cutting their losses, sold the rights to White Castle restaurants in the USA.
Frankfurt quickly became a powerhouse & the world wouldn’t have telephones today if it wasn’t for resident boffin Johann Philipp Reis who, disillusioned with 2 bean tins on the end of a string, invented the first ever make & break telephone able to transmit the immortal message “the horse doesn't eat cucumber salad”. Of course, this is never reported or taught in school with Bell being credited for being the first person to successfully order, on a telephone, a 32” deep crust meat-feast with extra black olives in New York some 30 years later.
Today’s concert-goers remain oblivious to the fact that the devices they block everyone’s view with don’t just record videos, but also embody Reis’ greatest dream. To actually make phone calls. To actual people.
Visiting Mainhattan this evening are snoopy , Millhaus , wilgy , godwina , Thomas , nobos , ruegi , olivier , jofigurehead & slowcure for some jägerschnitzel & some Helles. They may even take in a show & if they do, let’s hope it’s a corker
