Today it’s Kraków’s turn to experience The (mighty ) Cure.
Unsurprisingly, with no movies or bands bearing the name Kraków, the origins of the name are highly disputed.
There are those who believe it literally means Krak’s Town after its apparent founder who, in a bid to promote the city, followed in the footsteps of The Game Of Thrones and installed a dragon. But it transpired the dragon was a sleeper agent for the Targaryens & to stop it going all dracarys on the city, Krak had to feed it a bunch of cows every week. This caused a huge shortage in the supply of beef & prices soared in the local McDonald’s as a result. To head off public outcry with Big Macs tripling in price Krak’s son came up with a cunning plan. With no scorpion available, he slipped a fake cow or two into the weekly ration stuffed with smouldering sulphur. As luck would have it, the dragon had a terrible head cold that day & didn’t smell the sulphur and so died a fiery death. Or was it a fake sheep & the dragon burst from drinking too much water? Even the bloke down the pub is on the fence about this one.
Anyway, that’s how it got its name. Frankly, everyone’s quite happy with that, as the full name is Stołeczne Królewskie Miasto Kraków which many found very hard to fit on postcards and envelopes.
Despite having magic pigeons that turn bits of masonry into gold & deadly sibling rivalry over who has the biggest tower, the city, one of Europe’s most beautiful, is no stranger to fame. As a star of many blockbusters such as Life as a Fatal Sexually Transmitted Disease & Schindler’s List, it now also adds Bollywood to its already impressive résumé who came to blow up the market square and dance outside a university.
But enough of the culture. This evening maccatori & lioness will be making a bee line to the barrier at the flying saucer-like venue in the heart of the city safe in the knowledge that there are no longer dragons in the vicinity.
But not before chowing down on fresh pierogi accompanied with a few bottles of Zywiec.
So let’s wish them both a fantastic time
