Personally I liked the album when it came out and I still like it. Labyrinth has a great kiss me vibe Appart has a beautiful sonic soundscape Going nowhere is an underrated little gem to me.
It is subjective , it s art 😉

Because I haven't listened to this album in years I downloaded it to my phone yesterday and listened to it during my school pick up walk. Promptly deleted download.

There are some decent tracks on there when played live & I enjoyed seeing them in Manchester in 2004. However I can remember the last time I listened to the album

Same for me, I quite like some of the tracks individually but the album just sounds horrible.
I tried playing this album in my car this week driving to work. It was unlistenable.
I always thought of this album as RS trying to sound like Kurt Cobain. "Look at me, I'm so depressed! Still relevant!"
Just Godawful from the opening two tracks.
I bought this CD at Best Buy, and learned recently (the past decade) that they had a half-dozen songs that were only released in different countries to go with the album. That's ironic, because my favorite song on the album is "This Morning", something I never heard until youtube because it was a vinyl-only bonus track in certain countries:

"Appart"?
Apart is on Wish (and it's awesome btw). Maybe you meant Anniversary?

I also find it unlistenable and never revisit it.
I'm pretty sure I haven't heard all the tracks that aren't on the US release but I don't feel super compelled to seek them out. Maybe someday.

Lost has always rubbed me off the wrong way, but I think Labyrinth is actually a good song, although held back by suboptimal production (weird effects on the voice, etc).
Going Nowhere is one of the best songs they have done in their "Lesser Era" (from Wild Moods Swings onwards).
A couple of the best songs from the 2004 bunch were inexplicably left out (Please Come Home and A Boy I Never Knew). Well, maybe not inexplicably: it might be that RS felt they were too personal and didn't fit. But they would have raised the quality level of the album.
But overall there's a lot of "at best b-side level" material on this album (Taking Off, I Don't Know What's Going On, The End of the World, alt.end, Anniversary, Never, especially Never!!!, ...).
It's just that most songs on the album are uninspired replicas of stuff they had done much better in the past (just one example for all: Taking Off > Just Like Heaven, Friday I'm in Love) and the production is so bad.

From the "making of" videos that came with my album, it's safe to say that this album is what RS wanted to hear based on the lineup of the band at the time. Sometimes it's just about the sound of what you and your friends are playing at the given moment in time.
Something I feel when listening to 2008's 4 Tour. It's how the band sounded then, same for 2004.

For me from eponymous to bestival is the worst period of The Cure.
(1) The release of alternate tracklists is something negotiated by the reps in those specific territories as way of protecting their domestic release. Import sales in Japan of US pressings have hurt labels before because release dates are often staggered. Always wait for the Japanese pressing to be issued if a release is not synched across the world. The wraparound sash is a nice bonus too.
(2) The album does sound better off vinyl, look for a rip if you appreciate dynamics but don't have a ton to drop on a turntable.
(3) RS said at the time that he wanted to make the loudest record ever.
(4) The cover is dreadful.
Over-all I like the album. It's got nothing as good as 39 on it but does what I expected at the time.
It would be so perfect If you would just fall out the window
