I do not agree. If you're careful, Ebay is a great resource to find hard to find records from all around the world. I bought a lot of records that I would have certainly not have found elsewhere and was satisfied in 99.99% of cases. Then that's true it is much less fun than finding a bargain record in an old record shop. But, still, I made some nice deals on Ebay these last years.
Maybe if you're buying officially released material, that might be the case. But do not trust the never ending heap of bootlegs that are just CDRs burned from mp3s. The vinyls are perhaps a different story, but seriously doubtful. Anyone got the Japan 84 boot off ebay? Is it lossless? .......SPOILER...... No it is certainly not. But hey, pay for a bootleg if you want to. Be prepared to be ripped off though & know you're putting money into the pocket of some tosser who is making cash off the back of The Cure. Money that The Cure (or any of the charities they support) will never see. In addition, you have absolutely no lineage information whatsoever. So, basically, avoid it like the plague
