The state capital of Texas is named (& I have had extensive discourse on this with bloke down the pub) after a certain international man of mystery which makes complete sense as it is groovy baby.
But it wasn’t always the state capital. After Texas won independence from Mexico & became an independent republic the (then) vice president decided Houston wasn’t famous enough & the popularity of the Mr Powers franchise meant the Waterloo area was a preferred location & it soon adopted the name of the ruffled-shirted, velvet suited, tomb-stone toothed secret agent. And it worked. As a result of the name change, Austin has since been named the #1 place to live in the U.S. adopting the slogan Keep Austin Weird & promoting local architecture.
Tonight The Cure head to Zilker Park for the first time since 2013 for the first weekend of the City Limits festival.
Originally a ranch, Andy Zilker bought the 350-acre plot & used the Barton Springs for his ice business.
As modern fridges gradually gained the ability to make ice themselves, his ice business tanked so Zilker sold the land to the city & donated the proceeds to funding public schools.
The park is approximately the same size as Hyde Park, but instead of swans & horses & soldiers in stupid hats, visitors are more likely to see massive butterflies & creepy statues…oh..& The Cure of course.
So, with the history out of the way, what’s next?
Oh yes. Attending tonight will be fiveswinglive , spiralcure & olivier & I’m pretty sure they’ll have indulged in BBQ Brisket followed by pecan pie all washed down with Ziegenbock.
Have a great show y’all.
With such a colourful flyer, we’re not really stuck for the setlist tonight.
Don’t forget, SiriusXM are broadcasting live so if you have a subscription you’ll be in for a treat
