Pasadena is a Chippewa word meaning “Crown Of The Valley” & was originally part of the Tongva nation & indeed the oldest transportation route in Pasadena is the old Tongva foot trail, where the natives could take a leisurely stroll past the Rose Bowl & the Jet Propulsion Lab where they could actually watch NASA technicians servicing & building space ship engines in special clean rooms & even have a drive of the Mars rover before heading off to the San Gabriel Mountains to brush up on their skiing so as not to fall too far behind the Samauri warriors.
But, perhaps more importantly, it’s also home to the Doo Dah Parade where Doo Dah’ers (as they are officially referred to) get to drive boats, dragons & cars full of water around town & sit on brief cases too. But, despite all the anarchy, they do have a strict no throwing food or marshmallows policy.
All that aside, Pasadena itself, despite the Rose Bowl, the Brookside golf course & the aforementioned Jet Propulsion Lab, was largely unknown to the world. But that all changed in 1985 when it was given a chance to shine on the silver screen thanks to a strong performance by Biff's house at 1809 Bushnell avenue in Back To The Future.
Jumping on the coat tails of the city’s new found success, Howard Deutch cast Andie's house in Hope Street in his rom-com, Pretty In Pink wherein we have our (tenuous) The Cure link. The song the film was named after came from the Psychedelic Furs whose (then) drummer, Vince Ely had a brief spell drumming for our lads &, touring & session keyboardist, Roger O’Donnell still tinkle the ivories to this day.
But enough of the history lessons. Heading there tonight will be olivier , nobos , Danielle , fiveswinglive & Mr & Mrs weedyburton79 & after a few burritos & some Anchor lagers (yes there is a bear on the label) we hope they have a superb evening.
