The former “steel heart” of the Czech Republic is the country’s third largest city (yay, not a village!)
Prior to the Velvet Revolution, it was a major coal mining & metallurgical centre that also produced coke. But during the cola wars of the eighties, Pepsi shut down their coke industry finally… (maybe).....
& how’s this for a (very) tenuous The Cure link? The horsey on the coat of arms is thought to have been taken from the coat of arms of Ostava’s first vogt or “reeve”. So you could say it’s Reeves’ horsey……… .........
The city centre’s architecture is very pretty & luckily still there as authorities tried to depopulate the city into apartment blocks in the suburbs so they could destroy it & turn it into a massive coal mine. The fall of the iron curtain put an end to that nonsense & so postcard photographers could earn a fortune from the buildings’ images.
It has a rare geological feature called erratic boulders. These are boulders that wander hundreds of kilometres & also starred in the 2016 blockbuster Ice Age: Collision Course.
But Ostrava’s Poruba district’s main claim to fame is its starring role in 2008’s Babylon A.D., (not to be confused with the 80's hair metal band) starring Vin Diesel, where it gave a faithful portrayal of Moscow while the steelworks basically played themselves.
So a rich history indeed & it’s about to get richer as The Cure headline The Colours festival.
In attendance tonight will be Mr & Mrs drahos & lioness who will have stopped along the way for some Moravský vrabec & a few bottles of Pilsner Urquell. From all of us, have a smashing time.
Colours tonight will try to follow the yellows & greens of the festival poster but don’t all get your pantone charts out. It might be slightly off
