First thoughts after a couple of hearings:
Obviously I like the album very much as I already knew 5 songs (live versions) beforehand and loved/liked each of them. The studio version of "And Nothing is Forever" is even better than the live version. I am hearing some additional very nice piano parts and much less ringing/bells/chimes. "Alone" is as fantastic as it was before. From the three previous unheard songs I appreciate all. Personally I am sensing some "The Top" nastiness in "Warsong" and "Drone:NoDrone"; a comparison I have not read so far in the reviews (and I like "The Top"). "Endsong" is an intense triumph, but maybe not as intense as some of the live versions? Some critical points: I really think the album is too short and not because I am greedy and just want more songs at any cost, but it really felt that way for me. I do not have the same feeling when it comes to the album "Pornography" for example that is even shorter. For my liking they could have added another song. Another thing is that distortion overkill on the album concerning the bass/6 string bass/guitars. Maybe Robert wanted to separate "SOALW" a bit more from other Cure-Albums? Really would have preferred a more classical sound in those regards (I like the live version of "All I Ever Am" regarding this aspect much more). "I can never say Goodbye" is a kind of sore point for me at the moment. I do think Roberts vocal performance is notable weaker on the album than on any live version I have heard, what is hard to swallow for me. I know Robert also thinks his vocal performances were better/more beautiful in the live versions (as he told in the interview) and he re-recorded them after the euro tour, but then stick with the original versions....
Overall I think it is a pretty good album, the best one since "Wish" (and yes it is better than "Bloodflowers" for me). I cannot wait to discover more nuances in the next months and I am already looking forward to another (happy) new album.
