After some listens, Alone is actually maybe the best song they've released since 90s. It's definitely something I could come back listening to.
I expect Endsong to take that throne, at least for me, once it's released, but yes, I would put Alone for sure in the top ten from WMS onwards, probably also in top 5.
Other top songs since 1996, for me, would be:
Want It Used To Be Me Treasure Bare The Last Day of Summer Bloodflowers Going Nowhere

with other words, you are a Disintegration album lover
All common of them (songs) is the piano/keys parts played by ROD.
With just the exception of IUTBM which the best part is Sim's bass lines.
Actually the very first time i listened this one (b'side of the 13th) it made me feel like it was FTEOTDG pt.II

I like guitar driven songs, bass driven songs, 6-string bass driven songs too... when it comes to songs of The Cure and in general, there's no restrictive recipe
But I tend to like multi-layered, atmospheric songs, yes and Disintegration is my favourite album of all time.
But then again, I prefer 3 Imaginary Boys, as an album, to Bloodflowers, for instance...
By the way, I was thinking about this the other day: Alone, IMO, is primarily a vocals-driven song: it's the vocals [the melody, the lyrics, Robert's interpretation) the key ingredient of the song for me.
