Proverb "all cats are grey in the dark" In the dark, physical appearance is unimportant.
When listening to this song I'm thinking about the caves of Gormenghast mountain and the swarms of white cats that look grey in the deep shadow of the castle. The last verse recalls the prison of mind where a single note of depression, of only one thought, drowns everything else.
