As a conter-point to the 'sad songs' topic, i wanted to know what could be the happiest song?
Understand me: 'what a wonderful world' by Louis Armostrong is absolutely brilliant, probably the most positive song ever, one of the rarest thing than make me think it could be such a wonderful word if only humans could just wanted to make it so, but it's a slow one. 'Let the sunshine in' is a classic and real good for clapping hands, but it's not really head-banging. There are good happy songs by M. Jackson, Tom Jones, Beatles, well every pop single you can hear on the radio (except US college radio skate rock, which is just... US teen skate rock) 'happy', last-summer's hit by Farrel Williams was really nice and happy, and makes you want to dance, but still it's a kind of medium key. 'rise and shine' by The Cardigans is so nice but just a bit too sweet. Lemonheads 'confetti' ? Is that too rock? 'there she goes' by The La's is probably my fave pop song but, ah, it's The La's, they can't be the happiest ones, can they? ... As for The Cure, don't tell me wrong number, in between days, or friday i'm in love, 'mint car' is the one, period.
So, for years i believe 'happy shiny people' by REM is the one. The only down point to me is the slow break part, which it's not a full happy song, such a shame.
I had forgotten about Katrina & The Waves - Walking On Sunshine. problem is, you couldn't know, it's been used here in France for a stupid radio ad that ruins it! But in fact that original version is rather good, I like the way she dances at 2:15, that's the vibe i want! mr pleasant? argh, i find that style of music absolutetly horrid! and punky-disco Blondie, hum, no thanks either. One point for Katrina then.
well, i like Bellini - Samba de Janeiro (Carnival in Rio) quite well in fact. I find carnival costumes horrendous. telegram sam and i wanna be sedated are fun, but it's just fun rock to me, it's not that 'happy' i'm looking for. One point for Bellini
Oh, and yes, as you can see i reserve the right to myself comment your suggestions and disagree

Never saw those two Blondie tracks a even slightly "disco" (they never got like that until that moron Moroder started interfering). Maybe if you listen to them you'll see what I mean
'I'm gonna love you too' really has a disco background feel. 'i'm on e' is just punkish. i get the feeling that samba de janeiro might get on my nerves after a while after all
the 'bare necessities' is a really nice idea. I was obviously looking for pop-rock songs, so it qualifies as 'extra bonus song'.. As often, i prefer the voices dubbed in french, they sound better with the characters to me somehow, like with the Muppets. we loose the bare/bear play on words, but the title is happier: something like 'there is little needed to be happy' so here it is in french, in case someone is curious:

More seriously, thinking about Supergrass Alright Bobby McFerrin Don t Worry Be Happy Charles Trenet Y a de la joie (don t like him but you want a happy song)
oh yes, the Supergrass song is fun, but isn't it in a too low key? Boby McFerrin, non, it's too slow, too calm. Trenet I really dislike him in general, but i have to admit this song has got it all, it's not so quick but it's 'bouncy'... Happy Days, another very good idea. But it's so quick and crazy I think i would get mad after a 100th listen. 'i feel good' feels good indeed, but it's finally not that happy compared to the ones above. 'celebration' is good to clap your hands to, but it's rather 'slowish', isn't it? 'girls just want to have fun' is a song i really like, it's really joy and fun indeed, great to dance to, but again not the right key to 'happy'? Billy Joel, non non... ymca, no, it's good to do the signs, but no.
oh, no, steve, no, that kind of US skate-rock-guitar-band will never qualify ???
