how legit or NOT is this site??

I have been downloading Cure audio bootlegs from that site offa MEGA

and someone here told me he/she/they convert .mp3s to FLAC

they have some bootleg concerts listed as AUD MPEG CDDA .FLAC source

and others as AUD CDDA .FLAC

or SBD MPEG CDDA .FLAC

in some cases the tapers initials are listed but cassette sources are NOT

why all the confusing/unreliable source info terms??

- are these shows converted from CD's to .FLAC or NOT??

- are some converted from MPEG video to CDs and then to FLAC??

- anyone have more detailed info??

who knows how/why he/she/they do whatever they do!??/

so if you download from there you don't really know what you are getting in sound quality [unless you check it with an audio checker] or maybe NOT even if the audio files are correct and correspond with the date/show they are listed as or what version they are and the CD covers are the correct ones???

The long version..
The overall sentiment of cfa is a good one.
To offer recordings to fans of the band is a nice touch. And this is what they do
However, the way they do (or at least used to) it can be misleading.
A while back they explained (on their site) that to eliminate microgaps from lossy file sets, they converted them to WAV files & offered them for downloading.
A 192kbps mp3 will be typically 5 or 6Mb in size whilst a FLAC of the same song would be 5x that and a WAV even bigger. A LOT bigger. That’s the “MPEG, CDDA” lineage you are describing.
This obviously uses a huge chunk of bandwidth and disc space for a file that was initially tiny.
In a word. Bloating.
You could compress the WAVs to mp3 to conserve disc space, but any software that does that will strip parts of the data out of the file to (re)make it lossy and there is no information on cfa to say what the original bitrate was before it got bloated.
Even if you did know, recompressing would only serve to damage the file further. Effectively, you are compressing data that was already compressed. Double damage.
In addition, despite tapers specifically asking NOT to have file sets shared in lossy formats cfa ignore this simple request and stream the audio.
There have also been instances of people asking for the files NOT to be shared at cfa & the next day, there they are.
This happened with steve ’s Brighton show & one of eduardo ’s LatAm shows, but they have been gracious enough to remove them after being asked to.
cfa are first & foremost a download blog. That’s what they do and if anyone wants to risk downloading from the links they post, then so be it.
TheCureCommunity is primarily a community of fans & friends, both virtually and in real life too.
It has been built up and run by a group of people who also fund any running costs voluntarily.
We do have a sharing section that is available to the community. It is structured and open to both lossy and lossless downloads and the origins and lineage of the file sets is known thus giving anyone downloading an informed choice.
Sadly it became apparent that people were joining to either attack the section or for the sole purpose of downloading irrespective of the work that went into the rest of the forum.
There are a lot of serious traders in the community and all of them avoid lossy lineage recordings polluting the trading pool.
There are tapers here too and the more that people like cfa ignore their wishes (they aren't the only site. Most blogspots are the same), the less likely they are to share their work. Have you noticed the marked lack of 2013 and 2014 recordings in general circulation?

I myself personally download anything I can get my virtual hands on regardless of quality or format if I don't have it in my collection and believe any version/quality of a Cure bootleg concert is better than NO Cure concert at all
but I do prefer "REAL" .FLAC format over .mp3s any time I can get them and with ALL the Lineage/Taper/Version information included
I have acquired Cure stuff from blog sites, DIME, guitars101, and House Of Bootlegs over the years and have found DIME to be the most reliable downloading/torrent site.

I will cautiously continue getting downloads from cure for all ONLY because they have shows listed I do NOT currently have in my collection but will NOT be sharing that stuff here and hopefully have some other things in my collection that are complete in info lineage/taper/version etc... that I can share here and look forward to hitting the 50 post points mark to access the sharing section to see what I can both contribute and download

1. It's not right : FLAC does NOT damage the source, whatever source it is. If the source is mp3, FLAC will not repair the original file, obviously.

2. If i leave mp3 as mp3, when you burn it on a CD, a small blank exists between the songs. That's why I "repaired" all mp3 files in wav erasing this blank, and i converted into FLAC.

um yeah but mostly ALL the files from your site I downloaded as ".FLAC" are individual tracks and have blank gaps between tracks they are NOT all one continuous audio file so how/why did you repair the blank gaps??
and again why then convert .mp3 to .FLAC?? unless your .mp3 a.k.a: MPEG sources are/were all one .mp3X1 Albumwrap type file/ are they??

another more question:

- that actually compress/damages the audio file more.

ok so though everything after around 1996-1998 and up to current 2014 might have been circulated on the internet and I see a lot of these shows on different trading sites and traders now have full info text Lineage/ Source /Taper / Version / Venue / Track List info etc...

so are you saying most of the shows you have are/were on bootleg CDR and converted to .FLAC then/or are they also .mp3s converted to .FLAC??
what are the MPEG's you have listed converted to .FLAC/are they video masters converted to .FLAC??

The reason why there is no txt files is : i had most of these shows before people start to share with internet. Which means, by trading. And most of the time, traders don't know who is the taper, etc...

although I appreciate very much all the FREE concerts with your audio file downloads it is difficult to determine which version it is to correspond with from info

Of course all downloadable files are single. But you noticed that all streaming files are 1 CD long. And if it dosn't make sense to you, it makes sense to me ; that's why i erased all blanks with nero. I don't know how to explain it to you if you don't understand what those blank files are.

But if you want to re-encode FLAC into mp3, feel free to do it, or download the streaming files.

the big problem for me with c*r*f*r*l* is the fake flac.too stupid trader use mp3 to flac and share them on different trackers( for example i contact myself dime for banned the 2 sydney shows 2011).c*r*f*r*l* is a good idea but unfortunally bad used.its my opinion

be like your X-girlfriend going into your audiofile collection and mixing up all the CDRs in different cases that are NOT labeled properly

-aggressive comments because it pisses me off to no end when someone misrepresents themselves when they are sharing/trading audiofiles online and conducting deceptive / unethical practices like converting .mp3s to .FLAC or taking .FLAC files and converting them to .mp3s is totally lame!

- I have downloaded stuff there that was the complete wrong files from what the description was and had completely different cover art in the folder than what was displayed next to the download for example

there may be some good stuff in there but how are you to know when the dude is giving no info files with Lineage/Source/Taper/Version/Track List in his downloads and description like with only a DATE/LOCATION

AUD MPEG CDDA .FLAC like WTF is that??

- so if you are a serious collector trying to accurately catalog Cure bootlegs this site is going to seriously mess up your files and waste your time

What he's doing is trying to eliminate the micro gaps that are present between mp3 files in a set so that they don't mess up attempts to burn on a CD (although even itunes uses gapless playback technology).
Blowing them up to ten times the size won't damage the files. Just makes then enormous. Nothing more.
Re-compressing, however, will just add more damage.
If you don't mind lossy recordings, then go right ahead & listen, collect, whatever them.
But I do agree that being honest about what is being offered for downloading is important. Not everyone has unlimited bandwidth & some people still don't even have high speed broad band connections & to be pushed into downloading a file set that's knocking 1Gb when it was originally 2 or 300Mb is a bit naughty really.
For me, burning a CD with mp3s is simply a waste of space. Unless you save them as data files that can be accessed by a car stereo or similar that can play mp3 files. You get a lot more tracks on one disc that way. A heck of a lot more
