Not sure if anybody answered this, but yes you can. Under your profile, there is an option to use an uploaded avatar.

After testing this forum for a while, if it should turn out that for important features you would need an own server to run this forum on (supposed the code is freely available and not bound to freefourms.net), just let me know, I do run a server (othervoices.ch) and could host it there if you want (in this case let's hope you could easily migrate the database ;-) )
