I reckon ....... if next weekend is basically the same set we should let those attending just enjoy themselves and only report if something "exciting" happens, we can rely on Chain Of Flowers for the setlist and photos/videos etc etc.
Just got back to Fort Worth after the drive back up from Austin. Was a brilliant night with some brilliant people. The boys had 2 hours at a festival & so it was a foregone conclusion that it would be a "best of" set. I would describe the show as "Cure lite" really. & even if that set is getting old, they deliver it superbly every time. & although A forest didn't get an airing last night, Doing The Unstuck reduced me to a wibbling wreck. Bob wasn't too chatty. Simon was all over the stage, Roger was ever the professional & plays a mean tambourine, Jason was spot on with everything & Reeves just oozes quality. I could watch that show every night & not leave disappointed.
I can't believe I missed all of you guys in Austin last night - lack of planning on my part, I guess. Will I see any of you in Monterrey? El Paso? Austin next Saturday? Somewhere eventually, I'm sure. Meanwhile, let me go and post some photos from yesterday.

this is what gives me hope they will play the "good" set next tuesday... i really want them to do the wish set then the kiss me and pornography encores... we'll see.
I don't really understand this festival setlist thing. Let's face the facts and see what was played in festival since 86':
1986: Other voices, Faith, Forever, Pornography, Why can't I be you (not released) 1990: Jumping..., In your house, M, Faith, Lament, The perfect girl, Same deep water as you, Never enough (not released) 1993: It's not you, Fire in Cairo, Shiver and shake, Push (rare track then) 1998: Faith, Forever, The figurehead, A strange day, Cold, Kyoto song, Sinking, Torture, If only tonight..., Like cockatoos, Untitled, Cut, Treasure 2002: M, The drowning man, Faith, Siamese twins, A strange day, The figurehead, Pornography, The baby screams, Torture, Don't believe a word, The faith healer 2004: M, Drowning man, Faith,Forever, Charlotte sometimes (rare then), The figurehead,Siamese twins, A strange day, Sinking, Like cockatoos Closedown, Jupiter crash 2005: Grinding halt, Fire in Cairo, M, At night, Primary (rare then), The drowning man, Faith, A strange day, The figurehead, The baby screams, If only tonight..., A letter to Elise 2007: Fire in Cairo, Jumping..., Grinding halt, M, Kyoto song, How beautiful you are, If only tonight..., The big hand, Out of this world
And even 2012: A strange day, Cold, Just one kiss, Bananafihbones, The top, If only tonight..., Fight, The same deep water as you
I left aside the pre-1986 festival as The Cure didn't have the same status and repertoire by then. So, since 2013, a festival setlist has to be an almost singles setlist and let's do the same every night. It's the first time since 1995, which I didn't include here for that reason. It's far, the time when Robert Smith said he couldn't play the same stlist again and again without getting bored...
And last but not least, remember that the two first reflections nights were played at a festival !!!
What an interesting post fatrabbit. I guess we are all trying to rationalise the use of the repetitive 'greatest hits' setlist by saying it's for a festival, but you're right. In the past a festival didn't mean a safe set list. I do wonder what's going through his head, as I also didn't think he liked to play the same set over and over, but they appear very comfortable doing so at the moment. It would be nice to see some variety tomorrow!
Maybe his logic is that the more songs they learn the less tight they will be. but he has to trust in the fact that he is performing with four of the most talented people in music. I have every confidence in the world that they could pull off every song in the Cure catalog. And yes great post FR

steve and I will definitely be at ACL next Saturday too along with some other Cure friends. Hopefully we will run into you. Would be lovely to meet you finally.
thats the exact same thing i think everytime i see the end of the world or sleep when im dead on a setlist... the only possible explanation is that Robert thinks someone actually goes to a cure concert to hear those songs... and yes i always thought the same think when i read that "festival gig" argument, just look at the Bizarre festival 1998 or Zillo 2002 setlists and compare them to what they played.
Now, one would assume thats because they're playing on the US but, they did the same for Europe last year so i don't know what to think anymore.
Anyways, i just want them to play the wish set and then porno and kiss me on the encores, that will make my night and made my 6 hours trip worth it.
I think it's because festival crowds have changed .... even so, the Cure have a huge back catalogue of "Pop" songs that never get played and are hugely better than the Inbetweenies, The Friday Song, Love Cats etc etc ....
Throw in The Exploding Boy, This Twilight Garden, A Man Inside My Mouth, even A Letter To Elise needs an appearance - it's light years ahead of High and that other song off Wish.
Jumping Someone Else's Train and Grinding Halt were glorious at Bestival, so what if the kids didn't know what was going on!! So What, yes, play that!!
In my wildest dreams, they're performing all the dull stuff now and saving all the good stuff for a proper tour, perhaps Tuesday will be a sign post of things to come .........

Not sure whether Reflections at Vivid in Sydney counts as a festival. It was a stand alone show inside the opera house that was separately ticketed. I know what you are saying though. The setlist for ACL doesn't excite me at all and is very SAFE and STANDARD...dare I say it...for a conservative American audience?
