Hello, When did the band start to use ears technical stuff (to hear their own sound)? In 87 with the arrival or O'Donnell? Williams had some to follow the bpm in 1987-89?
Do you mean in-ear monitors? (IEM) I think only Jason & Roger use them. I don't recall Boris ever using them though. I think it wasn't until Jason joined that they became a thing. But I could be wrong. I usually am.
Vaguely remember Roger talking about this, he enjoyed playing in '96 more than later because it felt more "live" or something along those lines.
I'd be quite interested to know more. I don't recall any of them taking about this aspect of their shows. I understand Jason using them as he'd need to have the click track to cue up with all the effects. You can see them quite clearly here
& Roger's definitely using them here
But none of the others, at least in any photo I've seen, are using them

Roher Tlak about their fsvorite IEMs but not technical stuff and yes only Roger and Jason use it....

Not sure where I read that Steve, pretty sure it was around the time he and Teddy left or a bit later on, either in an interview or something Roger wrote up himself.
all other IEM's recording done during the tours are feeds for the technician, right ?
Not really. The IEMs are for the musicians mainly. So they can hear their mix when on stage. They're just an alternative to the traditional fold back monitors you see at the front of the stage. This isn't really about recording but more about the tech that the band use when playing live. The live recordings Robert has made all come directly from the line outs on the backline plus the audience mics.
It is my understanding that Jason is on IEM’s so he can lead the band into the songs via a click track. The click track not only determines the bpm of the songs ( look online for set lists many songs have the bpm next to them) but also enables the band to playback pre-recorded tracks back for live use. The click track is also running timecode for the video screens and lights. It’s all synced up like a finely tuned machine. Then songs get loaded via Logic X ( I think?) Robert will look at Jason to show he’s ready to start the next song, Jason will look at his tech to show that he’s ready to begin, tech presses play and then Jason will count the band in! Watch some live shows and you will spot Robert looking at Jason before a song begins. Roger uses IEM’s because he probably likes a specific personal mix!
