I've tried listening again with fresh ears Once you're 4-5 songs in and have adjusted then it's not a bad album, it just doesn't feel like a good Cure album for most of the duration.
If he'd released it under a different name, either solo or as a Glove-type thing, then it probably wouldn't be as divisive and could be appreciated for what it is rather than compared to that fearsome back catalogue..

What is strange is that WMS is the only album that gets this discussion. Back in 82', Robert already wanted to release Let's go to bed under another name. KMKMKM is built from the same kind of template as WMS: Very different compositions, moods and arrangements. Lots of Cure fans left the band then. Many people consider it as a masterpiece now. I think WMS sounds like The Cure trying new things, for the best (Want, Bare, This is a lie, Jupiter crash & many B-sides) and the worst (especially Round & round to me). I think Bloodflowers sees The Cure trying to sound like The Cure, some kind of cliché... The best thing with this album was the following tour... ...As for WMS !!!

I have a hard time believing that many cure fans left at Kiss me, if they were True Believer Goth, they would have left at the Head on the door, and pop/diverse fans come and go anyway; but the cure grew a whole lot with every album up to Wish. WMS was the first Cure album that didn't outsell the previous one. Which is probably why they started mining nostalgia for the next one. IMHO, of course..

WMS is as diverse as KMKMKM, but nowhere near as good. There are a couple of masterpieces (Want and It Used To Be Me, the latter unfortunately left out as b-side) and a few other beautiful songs (like Bare Treasure, Jupiter's Crash...), but many songs - especially the "poppiest" - are inferior to their previous standards.
I agree that Bloodflowers was a bit The Cure trying to sound like The Cure and at first I didn't think much of that album. But some of those songs have grown on me since then. I think it's a good album, which suffered from being compared to Pornography and Disintegration, which are clearly at another level.

KMKMKM is absolutely brilliant!
If one was into the cure for the doom and gloom only, then why sticking around after Japanese Whispers?
