It has a beginning, middle and end and they could play it live without going into Open. They use is an intro but they could just as easily use it a live song, b side etc.
Having said that, I loved it when they occasionally used Tape as the intro and then went straight into The Kiss.
I see I already voted in this over 3 years ago. I believe my stance has not changed...no! Haha!
And "it's not a song" is 3 votes in front. Is Steve going to invoke article 50 to make this a binding fact?
He can invoke whatever he wants. It still won't change my opinion. And if Tape is not a song than neither is every instrumental song The Cure ever did. If you can live with that, perfect! But keep in mind some of those would be
Another Journey By Train Carnage Visors Cloudberry all The Lost Wishes tunes... Lost flowers tunes... etc etc etc.... Lets just say lots and lots of tunes.

Carnage Visors is a soundtrack used for a friend's film clip. Another Journey By Train is most certainly a song, albeit an instrumental. As is Cloudberry & all the Lost Wishes tracks.
CV was played (as a tape) at concerts on the 81 tour. It is nothing like any other The Cure track & as such is detached from everything. Tape isn't. If Open were to be released as a stand alone extended single, Tape would be tagged onto the beginning

Gonna have to disagree with you there! It's a song in its own right, just because it sounds different from other Cure songs doesn't mean it isn't one. For me Harold & Joe doesn't sound typical Cure. Yet it is.
Poor Tape. You're making it feel like Pluto when they downgraded from a planet...

I'm with Pipperoo on this one. Tape is a song My argument Any sound, lyrical verse, instrumental begging, wind chimes, composed and written by the cure is considered a song. As czuczu stated it, as a begging, a middle and and end. No matter how long the song is. Carnage Visors is a soundtrack used for a friend's film clip as steve mentioned. So are the following intros to make the following videos:
"100 Seconds" (intro)- fron the trilogy dvd "Relax", from the album Blue Sunshine by "The Glove" "Tape" from the album SHOW
A song doesn't have to have words to be consider a song. Words have meanings that vary by context. You can say the same gaggle comprises seven geese or six geese and one gander and be correct both times. A sign saying "no animals allowed" can usually be understood not to prohibit human beings from entering.

It's an intro . If it's not then we'd best come up with names for the growling Cm chord that comes before Shake Dog Shake or the percussive 'piece' before opening with End of the World .. Not to mention the windchime ensemble before Plainsong ..
'Tape' is probably more in reference to its source at the time rather than its actual name ?
