This is such a great idea for a thread.

Right now, I am thinking "39." I wasn't born here, but I'll have been here for 15 years in July, taking me from late 20's to mid-40's. NYC has changed a lot, largely in what I see as sad ways. So many of the areas that had true character and grit are now versions of Disneyland / a middle American mall or playgrounds for the spoiled. Gotta love corporate interest and wealth. It's skewing dangerously close to socioeconomic and cultural homogeneity, in a lot of ways. Chain stores everywhere.

Thematically, cynically, that's a match.

Jumping Someone Else's Train and Lament get Honorable Mention. For JSET, it's about the fact there are so many people that mass culture and trends are very in your face, just in terms of sheer numbers.

With Lament, I think of these lyrics because of the sense of complete anonymity they suggest:

"Today there was a tragedy
Underneath the bridge
A man walked
Cold and blue
Into La Ment...

One more ice cream river body
Flowed underneath the bridge."

You can do anything here and nobody will bat an eyelash or act like they see it. There's pretty much a complete sense of anonymity amidst so many people. So yes, you could walk off a pier into the water and be left alone.
